Grandia II
Party level 47. Valmar's Moon. One Tight Dress found. Now, how about I obliterate this town for you?! πŸ•’25:19:43.

Updated about 12 hours ago

★★★★★ This game was my introduction to the Grandia series, and even though I hadn't played Grandia I or III at the time, I had very little problems getting into the series. This is probably my favorite Dreamcast RPG that I have beaten (Skies of Arcadia might unthrone this). Some people may call the story cliche, but I didn't really care. In fact, I loved it. This was one of the few recent games that I couldn't put down. Fantastic game, definitely superior to the PS2 version (believe it or not).

Basically! I'm using this patch: [Link]

As far as I can tell it just adds Japanese VO over the game, but weirdly the combat seems to switch to Japanese? The ring is in Japanese, but specific moves are in English, and select/cancel switches to the default Japanese O/X. So, it's a little odd?

I wanted to play the Saturn version, but wasn't able to emulate it very well, so settled for the undubbed PS1 version. I don't really like how the HD version looks :[

Lilith, thank you for the Sonic Mania rec this year! Even after hearing people sing the game's praises for years, it still managed to live up to those expectations. And now that I've got a Series X, I'm looking forward to playing more of my Sonic backlog like Unleashed.

I hope your holiday season is enjoyable. If we can find the time, I'd love to kick Diablo III's ass with you, especially with Diablo IV on the horizon.

"Over the wall and onto Dight Village. Finally, the farthest I've ever been in this game."

Oh, didn't realize you'd never been that far in the game. Well, when you leave Dight Village by boat, that is close to the end of disc one. At least for the PS1 version. Can't say for sure about the Saturn version.

=== Consider Your Favourites Questionnaire ===

How well do you know the content of your favourite games? Here are some pretty "out there" questions for you to consider. While this may seem like copypasta, I have in fact picked these questions especially for you.

1. What is your favourite game where one of the characters sings (or can potentially sing depending on how you play) at some point?
2. What's your favourite game that has no voices whatsoever (not even grunts or computer generated speech)?
3. What's your favourite game where the main character is not blue and also does not/can not wear anything blue at any point?
4. Out of all of the games you've played that contain bloodstains on walls or floors, which one do you like the most?
5. What's your favourite game in which you can see a human baby?
6. What is your favourite game where you can go inside a submarine?
7. Which game do you like the most that does NOT contain a desert area?
8. What's your favourite game that shows at least one motorcycle?
9. What's your most preferred game in which none of the playable characters can fly at any point (with or without the aid of a vehicle)?
10. What's your favourite game that contains ice cream?

I hope you find this interesting or fun, and it might remind you of some good times you had with a game you haven't played for a while.

My personal preference (from best to worst): Wild ARMs 3, Wild ARMs 2, Wild ARMs, Wild ARMs 4, Alter Code F, 5, XF. My introduction to the series was WA2. I've obviously never played Million Memories but it's a gacha game so no big loss (do love that intro video though!)

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that Wild ARMs 3 is probably my favourite game.

Most people rate the first one as the best but 3 and 2 are really special to me even though I acknowledge they're not the best (complaints about the search system on the World Map are totally valid). I still love them, though, but a lot of that love is from a period of my life where I was either writing about these games or helping people on messages boards with frequently asked questions. In a weird way, I owe a lot to these games and how they helped me transition into my career (tech support, documentation).

I'm also an apologist for WA4 which a lot of people tend to dislike (I get the reasons why, but I personally don't mind the main character and I like the fast pace). I'd like 5 more if it didn't feel so generic anime like (though I appreciate that the game is full of 10th anniversary fanservice).

The earlier games have some of the best female characters I've seen in JRPGs, too, including a great female lead in WA3. They're almost never bogged down with forced love stories with the main sword-wielding protagonist either (nor do they often even have love stories) so it's a nice change of pace.

The one constant is that they all have fantastic music, even though the most prolific composer (Michiko Naruke) only had a minimal amount of tracks in WA4 and wasn't present for WA5 and WAXF.

There's also something weirdly compelling and addictive about them. They tend to stick to the dungeon/town/boss model really strictly but they pace out new abilities/tools/etc really well, and it's kinda got a "monster of the week" vibe to it in a way that every dungeon feels episodic, especially with the cutaways to the bad guy's base for exposition and foreshadowing about what you're up against next. It's not masterful storytelling by any means but it's really fun in a videogame-y way.

Hope you have fun with Klonoa. Many people have fond memories of 2 from their childhoods. Imo I think 2 stretches its length and levels out too long but I don't think it's bad. I personally prefer 1 but both are good in my eyes. They also have their own strengths with 1 focusing a tad on puzzles and more on precise platforming and 2 focusing heavily on puzzles, lax levels, and surfing levels. I've also heard Tomba is another good 2.5D platformer series. Might try that one out too.

I highly doubt they're still a thing nowadays. Even if they are, it's most likely younger kids or teens arguing out of passion. Almost every game comes to every console so console allegiance doesn't make much sense (not to say that it ever did). If anything, console wars are just marketing strategies.

It really depends on how much you value difficulty and variety in Pokemon. I personally value variety and fun the most and don't care much about difficulty unless it's braindead easy. HGSS was fun for me until I hit the 8th gym and elite four. Dragon types are unbelievably annoying in older gens and they throw them at you from that point onwards which is agonizing. There aren't any high level ice or dragon types to counter them so you either have to train one 15-20 ups or just over level your team. Maybe I'm just bad but my fun was killed from then on and I had to shelf the game for now.

IIRC, the announcement was just for more RE4 remake footage and RE8's DLC campaign. People still seemed happy about it at the very least.

Hopefully the December cold front doesn't hurt you as bad as the heat then. Extremes from either temp are rough so you're not alone. Sounded like fun hanging out with your cousin to watch movies and play games too.

That's a problem I have with red rings in boost games too. Sure, they incentivize replaying stages and finding different paths for stages. But I find it more frustrating than fun. The other alternative is making them really easy to find on the main paths which is what I heard Frontiers does, but that isn't satisfying too. Collectables in boost games don't go together all that well. Especially when mandatory like in Unleashed.

Very late in saying this so you probably know the answer by now but you don't have to replay the entire stage if you're fast enough. As long as you save & quit back to the main menu before the timer of the special stage hits 0, you'll be able to load the save and try again with no consequences. I can only confirm that it works in CD's Steam, console, and mobile versions though. No idea if Origins is different or not. I'd hope that Origins is fixed by now but I'm entirely turned off from the game with how they hired Sonic fandevs to ensure quality for 3&K's remaster and still rushed Origins like all Sonic games. I've heard great things about Triple Trouble 16-bit and I'm looking forward to checking it out. I'll be hoping the same for Sonic Chaos' remake since that's another older Sonic game I played when I was young. Tail's Adventure would be an interesting one to give a shot one day. Don't think that's an option in Origins but it's nice that the drop dash is there at all.

After the terrible IGN gameplay reveal, it was maybe the right choice to dial the gameplay footage back. I'm also gonna be waiting to get the game since $60 for a game with mixed reception is a bit too much for me, but I'm hoping it's fun as always. Getting it for Christmas sounds like a good plan too.

I'm not really sure what's the difference between the Genesis Mini 1 vs the Genesis Mini 2. Hopefully that works out well for you though.

I know what you mean by the PS3 store being a pain to use. Maybe it wasn't so bad back when the console was still new/newer but it's unbearable. I'm just not a fan of any of the PS3's UI and UX. Maybe it was great back when it was new but it's tough going back.

I think it's fair to drop it then. If you don't have much interest in Persona then forcing yourself to go through long RPGs should only be a slog. People are real sticklers for story order too. I'm one of those people when choosing to play a game myself but forcing that on another person is annoying.

Not a ton of current gen or PS5 exclusives so far but from what I've heard, it does its job as an upgrade from the PS4. I'm sure it'll become more used once Sony puts out more exclusives for it and are able to supply more.

The whole situation was confusing and I still don't quite know all the details a few weeks after. From my understanding, Platinum/Nintendo did originally offer less than standard but bumped it up after she wrote to Kamiya. With her lying and telling half truths, her main argument is pretty much void. Imo nobody is in the right, Nintendo still doesn't treat their VAs properly is FE is anything to go by. But Helena royally messed up and it hurt many VAs opportunities for higher paychecks. I've heard the game itself is overly positive but mixed for longtime fans. Hopefully you come out of it with a positive experience at least. Yeah, those are all fair reasons and I only go for online shopping for new releases. Even then I only buy through Best Buy since I've had no problems getting new games through them. If they're used games, it's a total tossup. I'm not a fan of buying from GameStop anymore but they're usually the ones I turn to for used games since they're slightly more reliable. Prices vary with them though. It pains me when people don't take care of games too. All I can really assume about them is that they don't care much about games and they don't mind if cases or discs get banged up or collect dust.

Can't say if it's the same but it might just be the randomizer itself. I had similar problems playing N64 randomizers. N64 romhacking has always been weird and that flickering issue was something I only experienced with the randomizer I played. Thanks but my internet is garbage where I'm currently at for college. It's supplied by my building for free but it's normally really slow and I haven't been able to even play any games online on my Switch. I've been getting NAT Type D which doesn't allow you to connect to other consoles at all so it's been only single player games on my Switch for me. I appreciate the offer though. Yeah, I've heard the emulation isn't the greatest and you can see a lot of its faults with OoT. I'd say playing on PC that has a speedup button or sticking to randomizers would be best then. Lengthy tutorials make it tough to start from scratch with a lot of games.

I can see how that can make some people feel uneasy, but there is a matter of seperating the art from the artist, especially when it comes to media that came out pre-Twitter. When it comes to people who actually abused people in some ways like Bill Cosby, it's still kinda iffy, but as far as I know, Dave Chappell hasn't actually hurt anybody. Is his brand of humor offensive to some? Fair enough, but that's why you just don't consume it.

Seeing as how my political stance is neutral, I won't comment about the possibility of "enabling violence against people who aren't straight and whatever", because it's kind of like the whole argument about how violent video games or sexuality in anime allegedly makes people do heinous things. It isn't the fault of the media but rather the people themselves.

Back to Happy Tree Friends, yeah, I did watch some of it when they were showing them on G4, back when they turned the channel into something trying to be like Spike TV but for nerds. Yeah, completely horrifying and I don't know why anybody who wasn't like an avid Hot Topic shopper enjoyed it.

My Piko BBS cart actually died already which sucks, so it's cool I can play that on my Switch. Maybe not though since I already beat it, so maybe Wukong instead.

That's what being terminally online does to ya, and I hope he found the help that he needed.

It's just really funny. Again, I compare PokΓ©mon to Sonic. Hordes of passionate, rabid fans who eat, sleep, breathe PokΓ©mon and despite the outputting of games in the past few years (one out of four games will be pretty good, Sonic Mania and New PokΓ©mon Snap), people will still give the companies the benefit of the doubt and get the games anyway. Maybe just to complain about it online? It really is just a vicious cycle isn't it?

The gods are pleased with your pro-gress, Kratos. Yes, I told you Grandia was easy. According to MasterFwibbles, if you just level up your Wit, you can blaze through it even more. It is a shame the HD Collection didn't give the game any sort of new features like original visuals, Saturn or PSX effects, and a higher difficulty. Fast forwarding through battles could help too. But at least it has faster loading!

Keep goin', Fox. Ya doin' good. Peppy, out! Hey, did you ever play Star Fox Adventures? Do you think that game holds up?

Say, that's neat. A futuristic Goemon? That's cool that it exists. Another lost classic the West may never see.

That's a smart way to handle it. I played it at night with no idea it was coming so needless to say I was caught off guard.

I actually have a 3rd or 4th playthrough on hold on the moment, playing on "Village of Shadows" difficulty. I'm stuck near the endgame (just got past one of the most obscenely difficult boss fights ever) and I'm at a part where I'll need to grind for Mercenaries achievements in order to stand a chance (really need unlimited ammo for one of the weapons).

I did start Grandia. The HD version is not very good (won't run on Steam Deck at all, runs choppy on my PC), so I just grabbed a PSX iso and I'm playing it through DuckStation. It too is a bit choppy but I've got the back trigger on my controller mapped to fast forward to skip some of the loading between screen transitions. I like it so far (just got out of the first town) but I need to read the instructions to see how everything works. I would have loved to play this on the Saturn instead but I just don't have the means to do so right now (that, and I'm really enjoying playing stuff with a fast forward button!)

Half Baked came out in 1998, and I'm almost 100% sure nobody particularly cared about Twitter politics during that time period. I think I do remember people saying he was a bigot post-Trump, but I didn't really look into, because unless he's physically and/or mentally hurting people or something, it's not something I'm concerned about. Mind you, just because I say it sounds trivial doesn't mean that it really is. Does he, like, just have strong opinions? If that's all, then I can still hypothetically watch Half Baked and Chapelle Show and not think about it.

Code Monkeys was a pre-retro admiration cartoon that was pixels and vidya games, but it was very indicative of its time period where spiteful, scat humor wasbthe norm for TV-14 and higher comedy shows. The sprite work and presentation were good, even if it did rely on nonstop references (and this was before everybody started doing that), but the writing and humor is below average. Best left in the past.

ATB, you say? Kinda like Brave Battle Saga? This lost masterpiece needs to be played. If SEGA can officially localize Monstuh World IV, what's stopping them from doing that for Surging Aura? Oh right, their US market thinks all they want is Sonic, Yakuza, and Persona, and any homages to old SEGA stuff is limited to mostly Space Harrier and Fantasy Zone.

Hmm! He did? That's totally unhinged. That says more about his feelings than yours. I wonder if it was MotherKojiro's stalker? That sounds like it'd fit the bill.

Performance issues, you say? Don't fret, it'll still sell billions like McDonald's. I guess that's part of the problem, because they won't need to try. Just slap Sonic or PokΓ©mon on it and some people will be happy enough, so to say. Hey, remember the long load times in Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex and The Simpsons: Road Rage? That sucked.

Cheech and Chong I believe were based around stoner comedy, made popular through records. Only stoner comedy I like was Half Baked with Dave Chappell, that was a pretty funny movie. Remember the edgy 2000s? With media like Drawn Together, Stripperella, Code Monkeys, Happy Tree Friends, sure was a different time.

Parallel Trippers... kinda. It's very for it's time, given its use of cards, but it's not like PokΓ©mon TGC or anything. Still, an amazing GBC RPG.

Surging Aura? I don't believe it's tactical, but it uses the Phantasy Star IV engine and I wanna play it real, real, real, real, real, real, real, real, real, real, real, real, real, real, real, real, real, real, real, real, real badly.

I don't know what Sonic Frontiers is either! Maybe it's trying to be like Super Mario Odyssey, which would be weird because Sonic Lost World was also middling.

Yes! Shining Force 1, 2, CD, Final Conflict, III trilogy, they're so great!!

Well remember that Super Mario 64 relied heavily on the multidirectional analog stick, so maybe it has something to do with that. That and as well as the sensitivity of it, where you push it ever so slightly forward to walk slowly and all the way to run. See how revolutionary that is? The Saturn 3D pad is similar.

Dave's not here, man.

Man all that and we still don't have Surging Aura? Know what, I actually saw a Surging Aura w/box but it was $120. Since it's MD, I could MAYBE have played it on the Retron... but then again, maybe not. At that price, it'd be insane. Anyway, if you love Grandia, hope you do check out Digital Museum because it's great! FIENA PANTSU! Parallel Trippers is a good spinoff too, and it was translated by none other than... [Super Mario RPG drumroll]
...
...
...
[cymbal clash] MrFwibbles!

Oh, I disliked Magic School Lunar. Battles every few seconds with a loud piano sound and battles taking a few seconds to load. Really put a damper on it! Whatever happened to battles appearing instantaneously in Lunar 1 CD?

I never played Aria of Sorrow, actually. I just played the DS trilogy. I could wait for the Advance collection to go on sale. Maybe. I already got Circle of the Moon. [Link] God, that's so classic.

I'm sorry... one square at a time? That's unreal. Well, I'd still say you should at least try Shining Force II before you swear off them completely. I can understand why some people like, love, or even "wuv" Fire Emblem, but Shining Force has always been my strategy RPG series. It's also the easiest to get into. Both Langrisser and Fire Emblem require a bit more patience. Your characters fall in SF? Just revive them at the church. Need to level up? Just egress and start the battle again.

It gets pretty difficult keeping up with gaming. Having so many choices and so little time can be really exhausting, it's pretty great that you seem to have things in working order. For me in addition to gaming there's also work and exercise, I guess I did just play Tengai Makyou Zero for several hours. Seems like I can really only focus on one game at a time to make any real progress. That's why I can't really do any gauntlets or marathons anymore. Gotta "play what you feel."

[Link] Sonic Frontiers for Nintendo Switch review. I see some people on here raving about Sonic Frontiers. Is it actually good or is it just okay but good enough for a post 2003 3D Sonic game that they'll just take it? Nintendo Switch version aside.

What kinda jokes we talking about? Like, knock knock jokes? I never played Gex.

I'mma say PSN, Steam, and Nintendo Switch! Anyway, it rules! So I hope you do end up playing it. Fun fact: The game over screen has something that looks like a Saturn controller!

Grandia is actually a pretty easy game, but Digital Museum has more thrilling battles!

I, er, uh, actually never played River City Ransom on the GBA, but I do remember that and Double Dragon Advance coming out. What! You also don't like strategy RPGs? Both you and Mother aren't into 'em it seems. That stinks! Well I hear Shining Soul is meeeeeeh, but II is much improved, and seeing as how you enjoy Diablo-like gameplay, you should get into it more! Shining Force Neo and EXA wouldn't be a waste of your time because they're also Diablo-likes, sorta. I liked Shining Wisdom and Holy Ark is stupendous, but Shining Force III! A brilliant swan song in many ways. That was before Sonic! Software Planning / Camelot broke off from SEGA and started making games on Nintendo platforms.

Did they buy a Mini 2 just for the sake of tearing it down for a YouTube video? I hope they were able to put it back together.

Monster Tale! I remember when that came out, and that was before platventures blew up. I highly recommend that! I wouldn't mind playing that again...

Golvellius is good stuff, but you have to expect OLDSCHOOL Zelda. Like the FIRST Zelda, complete with cryptic bullshit. It does get a little grindy, too, but unlike Zelda, enemies always give you money, so it's not quite as inconsistent. Golden Axe Warrior is very Zelda, too, and improves on a lot of flaws that the original Zelda had, along with having better visuals and music; even as someone who knows next to nothing about Golden Axe, I'd highly recommend it. It was a lot better than their attempt at the second Zelda game...

I've been looking into some of those, myself, mostly GameCube and DS lately. Not sure I have a ton of suggestions for you there, aside from what's super obvious. Maybe SaGa Frontier? SaGa Frontier requires a lot of patience, but there's an incredible game beneath all the quirkiness. Definitely check this out first, unless you want to stumble through it blindly like I used to: [Link] I do have a few others for GBA:

Astro Boy: Omega Factor
Bruce Lee: The Legend Returns
Ninja Five-0
The TMNT games not made by Ubisoft, especially Battle Nexus
Wario Land 4

You might also like Monster Tale for the DS; it's a Platventure with Brawler elements and you feed monster buddies to make them transform into different types.

The first 2 Suikoden games are straight-up JRPGs, despite what the theme might suggest. Now, they do have tactical battles at certain points in the story, but in the first game, you basically just pick melee/archers/magic each round and beat the enemy in a rock-paper-scissors-style battle, and if you're diligent about recruiting characters, you can cheat and look at what the enemy will do next anyway. The second game has more traditional Strategy battles, but they really aren't a big deal, either; I completely suck at the genre, and I got through them just fine. I'd use the RHDN bugfix patch, though; Suikoden 2 has LOTS of bugs, and even though they aren't game-breaking, there's no real reason not to use it.

Mah history with Glover involves this: my friend bought it for my birthday a few years back. He was really excited to give it to me, which was unusual since I'd not played my N64 in years by that point. I gave it a fair chance and yeah, there's some good work done innit. Did you play the PlayStation version? That was worse off. What's it with PlayStation ports of games being worse? South Park, Batman Beyond, Glover... probably more!

Rabi-Ribi is just an indie game, it'll be fine. You shouldn't have too much trouble playing it on Switch, but perhaps it's cheaper on Steam?

I hope you are enjoying Grandia! (Gron-dee-uh) Be shore to play Digital Museum and Parallel Trippers!

Well well well don't forget, River City Ransom also got a GBA remake! Hey did u play Shining Force GBA?

Potato skins? I bet they were better than Chili's could ever make. And steak fajeyeta [Link] nachos? Nachos rule!

Do you enjoy Hudson Soft games? I see you haven't played Super Adventure Island II yet. It is one of Rarity's favorites! You should play it soon, especially given the whole Wonder Boy comparison.

Should warn you that there's a bit of a "mandatory stealth" chapter in Village. One of the parts of the game involves no combat and has a lot of puzzle solving and then a stealth section. It's pretty straightforward though and very "scripted' but it conveys horror effectively so it's pretty memorable. I played it recently in third person mode and it doesn't really make the stealth part any easier, but the game's a bit more fun as a result (though it didn't really feel all that "zoomed out" compared to first person, just easier because you could see your character).

I think a lot of being horrible at stealth sections is just being a bit impatient by nature, at least for me. My biggest problem with stealth sections is they take away a lot of player agency and usually break up the pace of the rest of the game. When I think about the Sherry section, I think "there's only one way to do this section and it's going to be the same every time" and it's just dull. I want to rush through it and get on with the fun parts of the game, but there's no rushing through these mostly scripted sections, hence the "impatient' part of me just not wanting to play the game as much as a result. As much as I love the remakes for what they did right (blending the old games with the new games, atmosphere, etc), it's things like that which make me prefer the original games most of t he time.

That's great! Really nice looking controller, too. Now that I can actually play my Dreamcast (received one as a random birthday gift in the 2010s, but have barely used it), maybe I should get one of these and check it out. Just need to burn some games.
