It could be anything; the games are of moderate notoriety, so that sort of thing isn't widely known, as it is with the likes of Final Fantasy 7, nor is it as obvious (this guy are sick), and I don't really have the drive to look it up. I have done translation work (for Spanish; most of the Japanese I know can't be repeated in public), and have been a linguist for something like 18 years, so I can usually spot what is and isn't a translation issue, and Golden Sun doesn't seem to be thus, but I'm not going to sit here and tell you that I'm confident in this assessment. My impression is that it was just written by someone whose writing skills are on par with a bad fanfiction writer. I don't mean the really depraved shit that you'd see on Fan Fiction Friday; just someone who didn't think about how actual conversation flows, and maybe someone who's a total Metal Gear Solid fanboy/girl, because the repetitions of what's been said in the form of a question are so prevalent that I always hear them in David Hayter's voice.

I knew someone who had a typewriter that had a white ribbon in it, you so you could actually correct your mistakes, but even in the days of my Apple II CE, it was always better to have a computer to type shit. Yes, even though you'd have to take out the fucking word processor disk to put in the spellchecker disk.

Eddie Izzard is a fucking treasure; I have Dress to Kill and Definite Article on DVD, since they're my favorites.

Oh, so it's a localization issue? I couldn't tell if it was a bad translation or just bad writing; lipstick on a pig and all that. Seems like most everyone I've talked to was about that age when they played Golden Sun, though I'd wager that that's the average age of a video game player these days. But yeah, Golden Sun is the game that I'm going to slam in people's faces when they say that the most important part of RPGs is the story and character development. It's a fun, well-crafted game with dialogue written by the proverbial 100 chimps with typewriters. Yeah, typewriters. I'm fucking old; whaddya want?

[Link] This is one of my favorite comedians, and that's what almost every goddamn scene was like, but throw in the old Hideo Kojima "repeat every motherfucking thing as a goddamn question for no fucking reason" bullshit to top off this shit sundae. So no, I didn't like the dialogue.

Well, your mileage may have varied, but I felt that The Lost Age was just long enough. You had to have it start out with the characters at Level 1, so that you could spend time with them; really get to know them. Well, as fighters; see above about personalities. That said, if any of them had any kind of personality, I suppose it would be Jenna, so there's that. I really liked her; she could more than hold her own as a magic user (which is more than I can say for most of the magic users), but she was pretty damn competent with a Blade, too. I used a guide, but only as a checklist to make sure I didn't miss any items that I cared about. Like after I got better shit than you could even find in the fountain, I stopped caring about Lucky Medals. I think I may have used it for a little help on a few puzzles in the second game, too.

The latter 2 just seemed like a letdown after the former 2 had an interesting strategy to them. The first one was annoying, but once you got all of his minions to be Thunder Balls, you had him by the ass. The second one, you just had to keep summoning like a fiend. The other 2... very specific summon rush and class setups, then do this thing and it's over. Yeah, Omega called; it wants its strategy back. That said, Deadbeard from the first one only required that you keep your characters healed; eventually, he runs out of MP, and he's completely fucked.

Well, the ending of the first game seemed like a big middle finger to me, and would have seemed even moreso had I not already gotten my hands on the sequel, like if I'd played it when it was new. The dialogue still sucked, but it got more into the actual plot, so the moments in which it wasn't just, "What?" "Oh... I... What?" "Yes." "What is it, Sebastian Garet? I'm arranging matchsticks." "I think I'd better go." "Yes, I think you better had." were more frequent. Bonus points if you get the reference, by the way.

Anyway, most everyone I talk to says that The Lost Age was too long, but honestly, I only thought that the first Golden Sun was too short. My final save of The Lost Age clocked in just under 40 hours, which is still a little on the short side, but the first game was less than 30, which is damn short for a JRPG. Altogether, 70 hours isn't that bad, especially if the game is actually good, and The Lost Age had some challenging fights, and some really killer puzzles; I was sufficiently stimulated, even if 2 of the optional superbosses were what I call trick bosses. You know the kind: you have to use a special sequence of attacks to beat them; like to hang around Final Fantasy. Those. The Lost Age was everything that the first game was, but better, and more. While I like the first Paper Mario better than the second, because its content was more concise, Golden Sun was really the opposite for me.
