A very rare Switch (originally PSP) VN that I got for a decent price from Play-Asia. Reminds me strongly of 999 or Ever17. Definitely playing this.

Lame name, great game. Mitsuda and Kato worked on this. I own both soundtracks. Had no idea it was localized!

I'll likely buy this game now that I have the first one, as Mitsuda helped on the soundtrack here as well. The SH series seems interesting, too.

Looks awesome, like a throwback to the old-skool. It....almost looks a little like a quaint game named Castlevania. What a coincidence.

Yeah you’re not alone - I played Covenant first and was a bit confused, and the original did feel a bit more archaic in comparison, but I do prefer the straight-up dark tone and story of the original for sure. Koudelka sounds super interesting though, small casts and innovative battle systems never fail to intrigue me, even if they never reach the sum of their parts. I wouldn’t be surprised if I never get around to it due to my current schedule…

Oh wow, cool! Koudelka is one of those older games I always regretted never getting around to, because it looks so interesting in its unconventional-ness. I had no idea it was (mostly?) fully voice acted too! Good to hear the story and characters hold up too, since I’m sure that’d be the main drive to playing, considering I’ve heard the gameplay is a bit tedious and slow, as you mentioned. I’m always in for something a little on the weird side, so maybe I’ll bump it up on my queue…

Hope you like Shadow Hearts 2! It’s my personal favorite of the series, but it can be a bit... quirky, compared to the dark and rather serious atmosphere of the original (and presumably Koudelka).

Hey Shadow Hearts! And Koudelka, by extension. One of my favorite underground series of RPGs, SH1 and 2 in particular. Such a unique and interesting setting, with good music and a solid story to boot! It just gets quirkier and quirkier though, for better or worse. Hope you enjoyed it! How is Koudelka? Always interested but have heard SUCH mixed things.

My problem isn’t with the translation so much as the writing itself though. It’s just so padded with fluff and redundancy, the characters themselves aren’t particularly deep or engaging, and aside from some key moments, the atmosphere and setting are shockingly dull, especially compared to some of Uchikoshi’s later output. It’s not like I dislike E17, I just think it doesn’t hold up compared to more modern works, which is partially my own fault for not getting to it until some 10 years after release.

Root Double… eh, it’s fine too. Honestly I have the same gripes with it as I do E17 so far, the cast is bland as can be, which despite the occasional interesting happenings, doesn’t motivate me to continue much further, even though I did make it to the last route. Hopefully you like it more than I do!

I can’t speak much for the modern VN scene, possibly because there doesn’t seem to be much of it, at least much that’s localized these days. But your assessment sounds about right - and I’m more than happy to support something that works as well as AI did!

Well I find that I and more gamers of my generation are growing cranky. We have a frame of reference of what it was like when people just made games with the intention of selling a quality game and there was minimal bullshit. Publishers trying to take advantage of and wring every last cent out of your wallet. There was SOME in the form of quickly hacked together licensed schlock but you could avoid those easily with reviews and word of mouth. But now DLC and predatory monetization garbage has become so normalized. I know how things SHOULD be so I can spot it more or less but what scares me is all the 18-19 year old kids I meet now think it's normal and that they are being sold complete games. It doesn't even faze them when their game keeps asking them for money. You know what's really sad is Activision was started by Atari employees who struck out on their own to get proper credit and royalties for their work. A noble cause. Now it is the biggest predatory cancer in the industry.

Yes you are cranky, but with damn good reason.

It's just weird that it even exists. That feels like an old school NES days style thing. Make a game out of EVERY property because you can. Wasn't there a Gilligan's Island NES game? Nobody takes chances like that anymore.

Ehhh, even so, I found Ever17 overly heavy on exposition and unnecessary dialogue. It was pretty obvious that it was written early in Uchikoshi’s career, because it badly needs an editor. By this point, he’s already expanded upon all of the major concepts he hit on in E17 in other works (VLR being the obvious one) to greater effect. Even though I thought the twist near the end was actually pretty incredible, I still found it hard to care much in the greater scope of things due to the characters being so flat. It’s pretty much the same feeling I’ve been getting from the majority of Root Double, which gets similar praise, and which I’ve likewise already gotten bored of…

I admittedly went into AI with low expectations, but despite the limited (and often obtuse) gameplay, I think it does a great job of establishing its world and building a relatable cast. Iris is a weird case, I was kind of annoyed with her at the beginning too, but despite the diverging storylines, there are reasons she acts the way she does, and I found myself invested in her as much as any other character by the end, thanks in no small part to a great job by her VA. It’s still far from perfect, but it’s definitely Uchikoshi’s best in a while!

That's completely understandable. I just had a bunch of finals and I was also MIA. Now I just have one more to go, but thankfully I have a week buffer between it. Languages are my weak point so I applaud you! Although I need to learn at least Spanish and maybe French...although me and French were never on good terms. It was my worst and most hated subject in school. LMAO.

I am also scaling back purchases, so I hear you! I've been really focused on moving forward, so gaming is definitely more of a backseat, but I do like to use it as stress relief. Gaming or anime. Nice way to unwind, I find! I tried to work 24/7 and heh, the burnout caught up with me, so now I'm more proactive with managing downtime. I need my brain to be at 100% when I'm working, so I've learned to let it just have time to not think or stress. (Sometimes it's only like an hour, but it helps me a lot).

You have to find the right person. My hubby is really supportive so I find marriage did bring a lot of support and stability. The problem is marrying someone who you are incompatible with. No relationship will ever be perfect, but as long as your personalities don't clash, I find it becomes a really supportive and stable relationship. Or least mine has! It is sad that people make those kinds of assumptions. Sorry if you had to go through that. Interestingly, I am not much of a fan of babies, but I love 5-8 year olds cause you can communicate with them and play with them and they are definitely super cute. Although admittedly, part of it is that babies seem so frail. I'm scared of hurting them by holding them wrong.

I doubt we'll ever get Dai Gyakuten Saiban. T____T Outside of school and video games and socializing not much! Surprisingly those three, especially school keep me super busy. I do a few extracurriculars though, so that's partially why. But I find that they bring a lot of benefits, so I'm happy to do them. Still same old plans. It's my last year at school now though!!
If we can unstop a stop, we can stop the unstoppable!
