It all comes down to how much fun you're having. Going with WoW again, try the seven day free trial. You might get hooked, then the $15 a month doesn't seem that bad. I'm generally against paying to play a game, but I've made exceptions over the years, used to pay $12 monthly for iRO, till I moved on to private (free) servers. And that was mostly due to RO having such an amazing learning curve that it was hard to play and, thus, hard to get any enjoyment out of.

I also see it as a good example of one of the more common anti-piracy arguments. One that goes you have more fun with games you pay for, specifically because you payed for them.

$13 monthly is about average for an MMO subscription these days (actually, it was standard way back when as well. I believe Dark Age of Camelot cost about that in it's heyday.). It's more of a 'what am I getting out of this' type of thing. I gladly pay $15 a month for WoW, as I feel that I'm getting more than $15 worth of monthly entertainment.
