I played a lot of the older ones a long time ago back when they were called Dragon Warrior on the NES. Still have those but I picked up the pile of Switch releases on super sale and nabbed the rest of my missing installments on the DS family. I never got all the way through any of them so it just seemed like a decent goal.

I personally really love turn-based strategy games. But I'll try to give an unbiased description lol
I've been playing the Campaign mode not the Career Mode so I can only speak to that but I have enjoyed it almost in entirety. The RPG elements really just include the ability to gain experience per mission but it is just a per-determined number based on the mission difficulty rating. The XP can be used only on the participating party members. Upping their skills to max costs a lot though. You can also buy and loot mech parts, equipment and weapons. you can also customize the mechs you have but you don't have to. it's also limited to hard-points for specific weapon types and weight. There's also a little base building and money management. You start out with just a small ship but later in the story you get a much bigger ship and can upgrade it a LOT. the downside is you have to pay monthly upkeep on all upgrades, pilot salaries and mech upkeep. you can have as many mechs as you want in storage but only a set number in your mech bays. only the ones in the bays cost upkeep.
As for the over-all difficulty and accessibility, it's really dependent on mission difficulty rating... however, the main story missions tend to be pretty tough. but for the most part, it's not too bad. I mostly stick to missions at or under 3 star ratings if possible. when you start out you only have access to light and medium mechs and low income missions but as you go forward that changes. you can also "negotiate" mission rewards via a money/loot slider and also you get reputation with various factions based on your choices of missions.
It's not quite as customizable as the old Front Mission games but you can play around with your colors, emblem and paint jobs.
I would definitely recommend it but it does require some learning curve. it's also not limited to a grid like most strategy games. but it does involve turn based elements so you probably won't really enjoy it if you aren't a strategy fan. but if you already own it, it's probably worth a try.

I've only played Gemini Rue and The Shivah, but I very much like Wadjet Eye's style. Except...I just had to bail on Technobabylon because it got super gory, WAY beyond what I can tolerate. Which is a shame, because I was really digging it.

What you described is pretty much how I was treating and status before. If I were playing more games I enjoyed, I might've stuck with it, but Gradius III was the last straw after a couple years of playing more and more frustrating games.

Click and drag in the direction you want to go...sounds like Tales of Monkey Island. Which controls fine once you get used to it, but is silly and different for no reason.

I've played enough of the Rogue Squadron games to have a decent handle on the space combat, but I definitely see where it would be a roadblock.

I don't think I've heard of Shadow of the Comet; what's that one like? I think the worst adventure game controls I've come across were in Grim Fandango Remastered; the inventory screen shows only one item at a time, it takes forever to cycle through everything to pick the item you want, it takes forever for Manny to pull out the item to use, and then every interaction involves the item you're holding until you put it away (meaning you can't just try a bunch of items on one object without waiting FOREVER to swap through them all). So tedious.

Unfortunately for me, I couldn't get into Witcher 3 and stopped playing after the first two hours. Western RPGs (the majority of them at least) really aren't my thing, as I've had bad experiences with other WRPGs in the past since then.

Agreed! The original Dark Forces is a competent shooter that's at least as good as anything else of its time (and I didn't get around to playing it until maybe a year ago, so there's no nostalgia impacting my decision), but Jedi Knight is truly a gem.

Dunno if you've seen me posting about it, but I'd love to have a fellow fan along for the ride the next time I stream the game! I'm about halfway through. Shameless plugs for my Twitch channel [Link] and archived broadcasts [Link]

I've noticed you're playing one of the Dragon Quest DS titles. Out of IV, V, and VI, which would you recommend? I hope all is well on your end. :D

Thanks! I enjoy writing those Mega Man opinions, and they've been a good supplement to what I express in my YouTube videos. Always glad to find another classic adventure game fan; that's one realm I love but hardly have anyone to discuss with!

Yeah it's an odd game. At first I felt confused and a bit overwhelmed, especially with the time factor looming overhead, but as I've gotten farther in I'm really starting to enjoy it. It's radically different from not only FF XIII 1&2 but also FF in general. I find that when I'm not playing that I am looking forward to playing it more so I'd say that a big positive. As for story, well XIII-2, kinda started to garble up stuff so I feel that this is right along those lines. I am curious to see how they wrap it all up.
