As much as I wanted to keep playing the games I know and have beaten in the past, I felt it necessary to start something that I haven't played or beaten before to experience it, finally. The combat in this game is interesting. The stun locks are triggering, but overall, I'm enjoying this game.

Oh I know. I put gaming on the shelf for a year and a half to study for hours every day until I got to the point where I can play Ace Attorney without a dictionary. (I still use one though to find new words to learn.) But I'm nowhere near fluent, that'll take me another 3,5 years at least But it's so worth it.

This is all sort of the pitfall of capitalism in a way. I believe a creator has rights over their work, but I also believe consumers have a right to reasonable purchasing. Ethically, it's obvious how this applies to the consumer - don't steal stuff. But what actionable move is their if the unfairness comes from the market itself? I'd still call it unethical, but it's not as obvious what to do about it beyond simply not buying a disagreeable item. Which you can and should do, but that's more of a "no opinion" than a "strongly disagree" option as far as reception goes.

Nah you're right, the whole legal situation regarding piracy and public domain needs a revision. There's no reason media that released on my birthday shouldn't be accessible for 80 more years. "Just buy it" works for the first 5-10 years and for as long as it gets re-released, but electronics rarely last that long, and the technology becomes obsolete much faster. How many times does someone need to buy Earthbound or new hardware to play it on before we can agree it's just theirs to play now? There's something to be said for discouraging physical ownership in an age of carbon footprints, but I'd just be talking off the cuff.

Exactly. That's a good metaphor for my issue in paragraph 1 - when it's clear to everyone that the market is acting unethically, at what point do we say the system doesn't apply or work here? For candy bars, we could just stop buying them forever. It would be lame but we could. The real world counterpart that warrants discussion is insulin, but I'd feel weird comparing my video game hobby to life saving medicine lol.

3rd version of FFX2, 2nd of FFX. And I haven't beaten any version of both games. And I feel like an even bigger clown for buying this on day one (at a ridiculous price) since I have Octopath Traveler sitting on my Switch. (Loved the demo) So instead of questioning how many RPGs I need at the same time, I'm just embracing my clownery.

The ethics of emulation are really muddy and probably always will be. My stance has wavered back and forth on it, but I've just landed at, "I mostly emulate games I've owned in the past/never had a legitimate way to purchase in the first place." If, somehow, TearRing Saga releases in the US market, I'll buy it right away even if I never plan on playing it again, purely out of principle. Till then, I was never the market anyway. On one hand, repro carts are closer to the integrity of the original product. On the other, it's adding physical distribution to an already touchy topic on top of, most likely, piracy.

Especially since import laws for games are kinda strange, which I take as them not wanting my money anyway. Or at least counting on never getting it. All emulating a product like that would do is potentially encourage me to buy their future releases. I also think that Public Domain laws are in desperate need of revision (Disney ). The final legal and ethical decisions are probably best made by people smarter than me, though.

I trust my own ethics. But I wouldn't suggest to someone that they should steal a candy bar because it might make them realize they like it and they'll start to buy them (although, that's pretty much exactly what advertisement is). So I guess I don't support emulation broadly, but I don't feel a need to take a moral stance against people who do.

Because of the double EXP when I started, I ended up outleveling a lot of the starter quests anyway. They were fantastic for getting that first bump on other classes, so I'd second that idea, especially for crafting classes since it's the high level stuff that's worth anything. There's no shortage of repeatable quests at pretty much any level too.

Oh yeah, original FFT is great about that. It's sort of an imbalanced disaster, but I'm the type that likes gameplay to reflect story more than I care about balance (especially in a single player game). So when you hear about Orlandeau all game and how he's the baddest badass of them all, then he joins you and can solo the rest of the game - I love it. Named characters all having specialties really makes that game for me. I remember Beowulf taking out the final boss mostly solo because his Drain (or w/e) skill did 1/8 of max HP every hit. FFTA is pretty good about it but you don't get many named characters until post-game.

Regarding Binding Blade - I say go for it. If you're just looking for a patched rom I've got one somewhere I could send, but the repro carts are really good too. I've played every FE at least twice though so I'm biased af
