Consider Yourself a Hero: Majority of games are beaten
Invincible: 10+ beat or complete in a row
Confused: Playing 10+ games at once
I'm sure the story was alright but I just wanted to hurry to get the credit of having beat as many FF games as I could. There's so many games I want to play that I cannot invest in 1 game that'll take all my game time away. If I imagined myself playing FF12 for the first time but skipping all the story, and then comparing it to my FF14 experience, I'd certainly like FF12 better anyways.

Sure, thing! that would be my pleasure, we just need to coordinate the good timing for both of us.
I think that here in Europe we are roughly 3 to 4 hours ahead of you.
Completely doable!

There certainly is a difference between managing 4 to 6 party member's actions as opposed to just one. I just don't think MMOs are for me. And if the only way to enjoy MMOs is to feed myself MMOs or expansion packs until I like it (basically Stockholm syndrome) then I'd rather pass to another game.
A decent RPG with decent story is like... 40 hours? Longer doesn't equal better in my head. A good game in theory doesn't need expansion packs to be good, to begin with.

There was a 30-day demo available for a limited time. I just took the opportunity to play it and possibly beat it so I can finally say I actually did beat all FF games and not excluding the MMO ones (still missing 11 though). My mistake was skipping most of the dialogue and cutscenes to make sure I beat it in time, because I had evaluated it would take more time. I ended with 17 days playable days left. Wasn't really able to enjoy it as a Final Fantasy title, since it was more about you running around spamming the same skills over and over again without much thought, rather than managing multiple party members at the same time, which I find more engaging. In my opinion the whole game was just running from point A to B all the time, and I don't think 3 or 4 more additional packs of such missions would justify a monthly subscription and discarding all my other occupations. I'm just happy I could beat a FF for free and I'm leaving it at that.

Grinding in DQ games is usually pretty low-engagement as well. For a series that's notably a bit more difficult than, say, an FF game, they sure make it easy to grind away. A lot of that is the relative simplicity of the user interface and battle system, I guess. HardcoreGaming101 refers to the whole thing as sort of like playing a slot machine, complete with the "you win!" sound at the end, and I definitely get that feeling.

I played the PS1 version first, as I got it at launch via preorder way back in 2001 (I think I'm the only customer at my local game store who preordered DQ games). I've still got the game in the case and all! I was in high school at the time, and PS1 JRPGs were my life: I had very little interest in anything else, so the prospect of a 100-hour-ish JRPG was immensely appealing. Nowadays, well, it still is, but it takes a lot longer: DQXI took me about a month, and a lot of it was played on my commute downtown to work.

I didn't really play the games as a "kid" per se. I had played a few minutes of Dragon Warrior 1 on the NES back when I was 6 or 7, but didn't get it until I was about 15 where I found it at a used game store. I then somehow got Dragon Warrior III for cheap at the same store. Seems to be a recurring theme that I'm the only person in this city who sees value in this series!

If I could rate the series in terms of preference it'd probably go something like this: 6 > 5 > 3 > 11 > 7 > 1 > 4 > 9 > 8 > 2. I know I rated 8 low, but I don't think its a bad game by any means: it just never left a super strong impression on me compared to others for some reason. 9 is another one I have a soft spot for because I love the character customization aspect, but I have a serious problem with how slow the battles are, and the post-game just goes on forever and is too guide-reliant (looking up grotto maps, etc). That didn't stop me from leveling my entire team to 99 in every Vocation though!

I agree with your feelings on the early games for sure. I still love DQ1, moreso than the first FF for sure. Whereas I feel like 2 is just a bit too archaic and feels like a "lesser" DQ3, partly because I played DQ3 first. Incidentally, DQ3 on the Game Boy Color is one of my favourite games ever, so DQ2 never really stood a chance.

Comfort food is a perfect way of putting it. Maybe there's negative connotations that you're supposed to feel "guilty" enjoying it because many of the games are similar and steeped in tradition, but I never feel that way playing them.

They're generally easy enough to play "passively" that I find myself usually playing them while watching a movie, listening to music, or even playing another game! I find even when they get grindy, I'm fine with it because "I need to grind a bit" is a perfect excuse to lie back on the couch and put something else on the TV for a while while I beat up monsters for EXP. (This is also a huge part of the appeal of the Pokemon games for me, even though I'm not really much more than a casual player)

Another favourite from an "on paper" perspective is Dragon Quest VII, though I'll admit the game is one of the weaker entries, and I wouldn't recommend it to everyone! It's more that I love the "idea" of the game, the "serialized" nature of the story with each island feeling like a different "episode" (this is part of why I love the Wild ARMs series so much, with its episodic "monster of the week" town/dungeon/boss flow). I also admire the absurd length of DQVII, but its certainly not a game I find myself coming back to often.

DQ VI does sort of feel like a precursor to Chrono Cross, which also did the dual-world thing, though there are obvious Link to the Past comparisons as well. I also admired the difficulty quite a bit, though it took me.

Do you have a favourite game in the series? Or, if you could rate them, how would you?
One becomes two as divine fission splits the ethereal light.
