Minion of Bak'laag: 100+ unfinished games
On Fire: 3 beat or complete in a row
I haven't gotten too far into L.A. Noire, was playing with my girlfriend since she doesn't really like to watch the shooter or the rpgs as they're a little too samey, and she's been out of town a lot recently. I have definitely enjoyed the part that I've played. It's a lot more in depth than I thought it was, and sort of players like a more active version of something like Wolf Among Us as far as investigating. I don't know that you could do so badly as to totally lock yourself out of a case, but I feel like I'm solving clues naturally and usually able to handle the investigations pretty well. I know a lot of people complained about not knowing exactly how Cole would react given the vague prompts (truth, doubt, lie), but I haven't felt like anything was out of context. The open world is a little unnecessary for me with the random crimes and collectibles, but that may just be my open world fatigue setting in. It almost always feels like filler to me, so I'm going to stick to the tight scripted sequences I think.

It would have been super hard to listen to people actively defend some of Nintendo's decisions during the early Wii U days. Everything from storage to online to price was just absurd. In fact, any podcast that so easily praises one company gets annoying. Even the one that I listen to is a little too Sony focused and anti-Microsoft, to the point that sometimes they spin stories that should be positive into negatives (e.g. backward compatibility going from an awesome thing to "why don't they have X game" or "is this enough to make people even want the system".

It's one thing from the old blogs that always blew my mind, and even reading Reddit and stuff today still does...I don't have a PS4, never had a Sony console, but it doesn't bother me if other people like them, you know? Like, I can enjoy my things without needing other people to NOT enjoy theirs. People liking different games or systems than me is good for the world, because companies catering specifically to me would get boring. Even saying that X is too expensive is sort of silly, because if people find value in it and want to pay that much...who cares? Me hating your favourite game doesn't mean you shouldn't like that game. Ugh, it just drives me nuts with the ridiculous arguments and pointless bickering. That's why I never got back into forums or commenting after the blogging days.

Minion of Bak'laag: 100+ unfinished games
On Fire: 3 beat or complete in a row
Yeah I'm definitely hoping to go again sometime. I love Seattle, and games, and conventions, so really it's a perfect fit.

I imagine NVC and PB have had some serious turnover since the blogging days. Anybody still there from what I would call the Golden Years? I guess Peer has been there for a long time! I didn't remember him being on the podcast though. It was Craig, Cassamassina, and Bozen? Bozer? And Daemon for a while as well. There was an Easy Allies panel there that I would have loved to go to, they always have some pretty interesting takes on the state of the industry, although I think the panel was primarily on patreon style funding.

I agree with you 100% on the JRPG stuff. Every one of your points sums up why I never play them. Which is a shame, because some of them have some pretty interesting art styles and clever battle mechanics, they just hide them behind this insane amount of arbitrary grinding. I would way rather they either balance the main game so that you're always properly leveled to make it challenging but fair, and you can grind on your own if you want. Or, rather than so many random battles, do what Fire Emblem does and create scenarios that are crafted specifically like a problem or puzzle that you need to solve. It would give each fight some actual weight, and take away some of the pacing issues where you have a goal to accomplish but "wait hold on I'm going to kill 500 giant rats to level up this equipment I just found".
