I'm still working on it, slowly but surely. Dragon Quest XI has been occupying all my gaming time.

The good thing is that I've completed all the massive JRPG games in the collection, so it's a matter of playing stuff that's less time consuming to beat.

I have a few other Genesis games on a couple other Genesis collections (and now a Genesis Mini) so I want to work on those as well. My plan now is to sort the games chronologically and beat them in release order.

That's a great tip! Thanks!

I'm normally a fan of just sticking to the North American release, but sometimes they take the increased difficulty to discourage rentals thing too far (Streets of Rage 3, for example).

Right now its more an issue of I don't really have a TV to play on or a couch to sit on. As such, any game that demands concentration is sort of out of the question.

It sorta fell by the wayside, but I'm resuming today. I'm probably going to restart Landstalker because I got myself stuck in an inescapable situation with my save state and I hadn't actually physically saved in a while. I'm not too far into the game anyway.

There's some games in this collection I just really, really want to play, and a couple I'm not really wild on. But getting through this game alone will result in a lot of progress for game completion this year so I really want to press through.

When you factor in the games I had beaten prior to obtaining this collection, I've beaten 27 of them.

I see that you just beat Virtua Fighter 2. I am so sorry. That game is so bad. I would definitely wash it off with the true version thats on PSN/XBLA.

Oh, nice! That's actually something I was considering doing, too: listing the games in my "compilation" titles as separate entries in their "actual" systems, and then listing the title as its own game and considering it Complete when I finish every game and complete the little in-game challenges and feats. I own a fairly large number of games that are part of retro compilations so this approach makes sense to me.

In these cases I will often replay the games I've played before, too, particularly if there's something to unlock in doing so. In this case I'm giving each game at least a play. I might not beat Streets of Rage 3 this time when I get to it but I'll at least give it a shot once. Probably going to skip Phantasy Star IV though because the experience is still fresh in my mind and I really, really don't have time to be replaying JRPGS at this stage in my life! XD

That's a smart idea, and as I said, a good way to avoid burnout of a particular genre. It'd be a mistake to play all the Phantasy Star games back to back, or even the Shining games.

Come to think of it, that's part of the reason why I think the latter three Mega Man games on NES get so much flak. People play them as part of the compilation as a marathon so by the time you get to even 5 you're burned out. That's not to say they're flawless, but I have a hard time even saying Mega Man 6 is less than "pretty great" despite it being way too easy and a bit tired. I can argue that Mega Man 10 is objectively not so great because of the weapons, but 5 and 6 get a bit too much hate for my liking.

Kid Chameleon reminds me of gaming with my brother, which I miss dearly. I love how incredibly vast and insurmountable the game is. That and Comix Zone are certainly not perfect but they have lots of appeal.

Actually, a lot of this collection reminds me of my brother. For Christmas one year, my mom bought us a bundle of Sega games on PC. It had Sonic CD, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Sonic R (ugh), and Sega Smash Pack 2. While I was struggling through college and grinding through JRPGs, my brother played the absolute hell out of that pack, so I'm really familiar with stuff like Flicky and Shining Force despite never having played them. I was in the same room as them, after all! I even enjoy the PC exclusive Sonic 3/Knuckles MIDI tracks despite them not being as good as the Genesis originals.

So in a way I'm playing these games so that I have something to talk about when I see him again!

Oh yeah! My reasoning is that I have 3 separate Sega collections: the Switch compilation, the Steam compilation, and an XBox 360 compilation, in addition to a Gamecube compilation of Sonic games AND owning some of the original game carts. Tis will be a fantastic way to get through a lot of backlog.

I don't know how many games in I am because I've already beaten a number of these titles on the 360 (or Genesis) way back when! I am mostly doing things chronologically, but I am so eager to just say "fuck it" and start playing Landstalker and re-playing Beyond Oasis.

Mixing them up is a good idea! I learned the hard way that 3 of the 4 "1988" games are on-rails shooters. Space Harrier II was decent at least! Not really a fan of Super Thunder Blade though. Gain Ground was the lone exception, and it was a cool idea, but was frustratingly cheap at times (the last boss particularly.)

I gotta say though, being able to play them on the Switch is wonderful. Fast forward and portability are a godsend, especially for the RPGs! I can grind on the way to work! As I sort of climb my way up in the working world, I'm starting to realize what a blessing being able to speed through the grind is!

Really enjoying the Genesis aesthetic too. The Sonic games are nice but they get way too much credit. Kid Chameleon and Comix Zone deserve more love.
Cheers, love! The Backlog is 'ere!
