Master of Unlocking: Majority of games are completed

Is that right? I might've misinterpreted that FAQ up top, but still, the opportunity was there and I had to take it.

Really enjoyed somma these. Mystical Ninja (on the EU Konami GB Collection Volume 3) was a nice surprise, Castlevania II GB has plenty of good ideas that make it a unique entry in the series without screwing up the traditional formula, and Solar Striker is an example of Nintendo going off the beaten path and attempting a shootie. Not only that, but when I've finished Bubble Bobble Part 2, GB Genjin 2, and A Boy and his Blob, I'll have been caught up with GB games I've had for a while. Oh, I'm pumped!

Yeah, still in good condition, screen and all. It probably helped that I haven't played it too much until recently, only bringing it out to play Tetris or Kirby's Dream Land or something, but I had the opportunity to play some games in the most authentic way (meanwhile I just play the Super Game Boy, to which I didn't know offhand that games didn't run on the correct clock speed, but oh well.) Actually, Doraemon 2 has some effects, like wavy underwater effects or forest fog, that I oughta check out on the dot matrix screen.

The weird thing about this silver Pocket is that it has no battery indicator. I thought it was odd, but then I saw that the first version of the Pocket lacked one while they did a revision one year later that gave it one. Kinda sucks, but... damn, is this reflective screen edge shiny or what? It's certainly unique.

Yeah, I mean, the Color pretty much makes the original and Pocket obsolete (as the Advance did for Color, technically), but mine is worn out and has a broken battery holder. That's probably why I'm looking to get it fixed up and modded, but the Pocket was a good, cheap alternative for a while. Plus, did you know the GBC's screen is slightly smaller? I didn't realize this until I looked at the Pocket and Color side by side.

Gradius: The Interstellar Assault was so short that I probably should've finished it long ago. Well, better late than never.

I sure have! The motivation? When that site remake launches (whenever that may be), ya ain't gon' be able to personalize your page no 'mo, which honestly really blows! So, I asked MotherKojiro to spruce up some GB colors for this campaign I'm currently doing, and it's going well! I finished quite a bit in the last few days, some are games that I've had for a while now, and that's great! If not a bit embarrassing, since a game like Gradius: The Interstellar Assault only lasted roughly twenty minutes. Still, so great!

Not the easiest on the eyes? So, just like the original GB screen itself. So, I nailed it. Booyah, booyah! In all seriousness, don't fret. I'll switch to the Pocket colo(u)rs next week.

Just got myself a silver Pocket, actually, for $40 after trade ins. Looks like you don't see Pockets too much these days for some reason? I hope I can make this one last. Course, I wanna preserve my old green screen as well while it's in good condition. Buttons aren't worn down, the screen hasn't rotted, and the motion blurring hasn't worsened!

I see!

Well, I took note of what you said and also good GB games are getting scarce around these parts, so I snagged as much as I could within the last five days. The notable ones I got a couple days ago were Trax (the most pricy at $40), Popeye 2 (J) Solomon's Club, Battletoads, Miner 2049er, Boxxle II, and Castlevania II GB (J). I probably didn't need Miner or Belmont's Revenge since they're on Switch (well, the GB version of Miner isn't on Atari 50, at least), but I don't regret it, because you're right, it's only a matter of time before they start to go up.

Well, it's Natsume, so there's a solid chance it'll appear on Switch Online (although, it was on the 3DS.)

Hmm. One of the games I want, Trax, seems to be going for 40 - 60 bucks. That's not terribly high, but it kinda is for a Game Boy game. Hmm, if that's the case, then it's a good thing I'm snagging some up some before the possible flood of "Guys, check out my Game Boy collection! $$$, hidden hiddens, and more! Please love me" videos come up in the near future. Even if one makes the argument collectors on YouTube aren't responsible for rising classic gaming prices, they don't help.

As I've stated, the more expensive ones, I'm looking to just get repros of. I can totally pay $30 or so for a game that goes for... I shudder to think how much Tater 2 or 3 goes for now. Castlevania Legends is also piss high, but thankfully it's, somehow, not a great game? Who'd a thunk it?

I saw Legend of the River King! It was $55. I also saw one of the Daikaiju Monogatari games. Didn't get them because they were JP, obviously, but I did recognize it!

Check oot what I got so far

Cyraid
Daedalian Opus
Golf
Hatris
Ms. Pac-Man
Solar Striker

Cyraid looks interesting. I'm intrigued by the idear that it has graphics that look similar to Super Mario Land, but it's not Nintendo! It was also developed by Epoch, the company responsible for all those Doraemon games on Game Boy.

Well, I've seen Office Space, so I'd believe it. That and if it's a bigger project, you would have to wait to do your part until you see how the other parts are programmed, just so everything can fit together properly; it seems almost like manufacturing something like a car, but you don't know what the other parts are going to look like, and you're only making one part. I'm fortunate in that while I technically have an office job, it reminds me a lot less of an office than other non-office jobs I've had. No bullshit office politics (it's there, but you have to go looking for it; it doesn't come to find you in the middle of the night and drag you out of bed), meetings are once a week, and I have a fair amount of autonomy in how I'm able to approach things. That all said, I am still in the healthcare industry, and just this month, I had an audit that went a week and a half past the billing cutoff (meaning that this took well over a month) because one pharmacy just decided they weren't going to get back to me on a single e-mail; this is an industry where you do often have to wait on other people, and I definitely know how frustrating that can be.

I don't typically follow development super closely on much of anything - the most I do is follow Analgesic on YouTube, and they post things here and there (SO MANY LASER FISH) which is typically more promotional than anything - but I definitely believe that. I wrote a Zelda retrospective (I know: HOW ORIGINAL, but mine did have a thesis statement of sorts) several years back, and I broke the thing up into four different eras, mapped everything out, and I was all ready, and... oh wait... that's it? That's really all the mainline Zelda games minus Majora's Mask? I was surprised at just how few of them there actually were, especially considering that it's been around since the '80s. I'm starting to wonder if that's part of the franchise's success, too; make just little enough that people are still rabidly craving more.

I can see that being smart; certainly not having people who've done it before can have its downsides, but it'll more likely be people who want to work on it. I do imagine it's stressful as hell, because even though the last one I played in any kind of depth was Brawl, there was SO MUCH CONTENT. I really want to try Ultimate, because I've always wanted some kind of Fighter that has Richter Belmont, but I'm honestly intimidated by the enormity of its roster. That and not thrilled that more than half of the characters are from Fire Emblem.

That's another area where I struggle: the actual design. Oh sure, I've made plenty of custom stages in Smash Bros., but the ones I really thought were cool ideas are the ones everyone hated; the ones people loved where the ones where I just threw a bunch of shit together because I was in that, "Hey, what's this object do?" stage of messing around with the creator and gave it a generic name. I also made a game in RPG Maker (the PlayStation version) that took me months and has lots of really cool ideas without any balance or even meaningful implementation of a lot of those ideas, because the only elemental system you can make in the engine is a rock-paper-scissors type of deal, and mine had 8 elementals, each with two "sides", like the dark side of green was earth and the light side was wind. I've got lots of cool ideas for skill and class systems, like splitting the two, so mages aren't useless in combat and knights can have skills that aren't just "equip sword", but no real talent or vision for making a good game for them. Of course, that means I get to say cool-sounding unaware things like, "Yeah, basically, I'm more of a visionary than an actual designer." Read that in a '90s surfer dude trying to sound intelligent and classy voice. YOU KNOW THE ONE. I'll confirm that it's much easier when you have something to start with, though; that's what my time with the map editors in Heroes of Might and Magic have taught me at least... which reminds me that I have copies of 4 and 5 that I've never even played; I should check those out sometime.

Programming is really cool when you know what you're doing, the code compiles, and then *gasp of all gasps* does what it's supposed to. Pretty much every other time, it's frustrating drudgery. At least, that was my experience. I'd certainly believe it; it's almost like overworked employees pulling doubles and sleeping under their desks aren't as productive and efficient as those working normal hours. I think this problem would've sorted itself out by people voting with their wallets, if we hadn't already been programmed to be good little consumers; less kicking and more licking. Quality doesn't matter anymore, and neither does reputation, because they don't affect profits; preorder now, bitch about it later, then preorder the next damn thing like clockwork. Yeah, I think if the developers' reaction to being finished is more excitement and less, "Glad that's over," you've got a good chance that it's a better product. As for having fresh blood on your IP, I agree in principle, but I've played the Zelda Oracle games and both Mega Man XTREMEs, so in practice, my experiences don't necessarily line up. We'll if Minish Cap breaks that tradition... although, A Link Between Worlds was outsourced, wasn't it? That's one of my favorites.

Oh, if I had the chops, there are TONS of mods, hacks, whatever you wanna call 'em that I'd be working on. Things I'd like to see fixed, but also passing fancies, like turning Super Metroid into a Batman game just because it could work, even now that dad-aged bros have low-key ruined Batman for me. Of course, I'd need artistic talent to go with that, but hey, this is my fantasy world, right? Make the games you want to play. That is also true; whoever made that Thomas the Tank Engine mod for Skyrim sure didn't have to answer to anyone. I could see it. That reminds me of a poem another friend of mine from here had as her page note about rich fantasy lives. It's not exactly the same, but it at least grazes the idea that even though so many people define their identity by their day jobs, there are those of us who are more than what we do to keep the lights on. Certainly, I am more than just beating up insurance companies and swapping war stories with other old pharmacy veterans. "Remember when Colchicine didn't have a brand equivalent? Yeaaaaah, those were the days."

I can't say I've had any kind of successful programming career - I used to be half-decent at low-level C, and I was pretty good with Cobol, but that sure as hell wouldn't cut it today - but I do have the impression that this is more and more true the more time goes on and the more video games are just a business to those at the top of the ladder. Developers know a game is grindy and frustrating, but gotta push those EXP boosters to "skip the grind!" Nobody who cares about the end product wants to design a game like that, but the industry is making enough money that it's run by blank executives, who have no other skills under their belts. Almost makes me wish for another crash, so the businessmen move out and the people who care about the craft move back in, at least hypothetically. I think you might be right about the list of features thing, too, because that was at the beginning of the design-by-checklist age that was the Seventh Generation that I mentioned in a previous message. Just kinda sucks when the masses are convinced this is a good thing, and start parroting the features like they're what matters.

I think that's becoming truer and truer for much the same reason; high morale implies some sense of agency in the development team. You're much more excited to advertise your own ideas, because they're something you care about. As a fan of crazy ideas, I heartily endorse that, too! Even if I haven't been into a Mario game since... probably Super Paper Mario, and even if I've never liked the Rabbids, and TOTALLY SUCK at all things Strategy, I think the world of gaming is a slightly for it, just because someone's using their actual brain to come up with something other than the status quo. Certainly there are crazy ideas that nobody's ever tried for a good reason, and they should be vetted at least through some kind of playtesting before shoving it out the door, but weird ideas are what gave birth to this industry. Cliched argument about Pac-Man basically being the raver subculture before it existed, but it's still true.
All right, back to work you lazy Teros!
