Contrary to my own thoughts, Overwatch has become my go to procrastination game. I didn't think I'd get it because of Blizzard's track record post-merger, but maybe something original out of the camp might fare better. Although that's "original" by Blizzard standards being a new IP. It is very much TF2 + DOTA2 + The Incredibles.

Thought I would pick up Star Fox Zero and Tokyo Mirage Sessions to farewell the Wii U, but neither of them seem to be better than average. I thought I'd just blow the cash on the NX and Zelda Breath of the Wild, but I keep remembering how buying launch hardware is never a good decision.

So all that is concrete for me is FFXV, although I'm already anticipating disappointment. I guess I'd also be playing Last Guardian this year, but I can't recall the exact launch date.

I've also completed my build with a new GTX 1070 GPU that came all the way from the USA. Really want to get a cutting edge game to play on it like Mankind Divided or Dishonored 2, but I have played neither of those franchises' lead up games.

That seems to sum up the rest of 2016 in gaming for me. No Man's Sky is coming out in the next few days but I seem to think it's another Spore, for which I pirated but still claim to be ripped off.

It isn't as though I haven't enjoyed story driven games before, but for story driven series I usually can't help but start from the beginning. This case meaning I would start from Witcher 1, which apparently has a less action oriented combat system, although that may be better seeing as I now compare the Witcher to the Souls series. But going back to Witcher 1 means the excuses for dropping the cash on this new PC thins out
I assume that Witcher 3 was meant to be accessible enough for newcomers, after all Xbox only had Witcher 2, and Playstation has never had a Witcher game. But from my few hours with Witcher 2, even though the story revolves around Geralt being an amnesiac, I still felt like I was missing a lot by not having played Witcher 1.

And then there's the case that I myself may not enjoy the story, although I've gone along with many story driven titles in the triple A segment, and have enjoyed most of them. But I do have a particular distaste for the more recent "cinematic" kinds of blockbuster games. Having played RDR and Uncharted where I just didn't connect with the story, and the gameplay couldn't compensate for that, I just avoided more recent stuff like Bioshock Infinite and Last of Us because I really anticipate my experience with those will be much the same.

It's weird, I've enjoyed pretty sappy stories like FFX and Persona and Kotor, but even those are fairly average compared to the best of TV and movies. But then you have those games like MGS and Silent Hill that deliver on both story and gameplay so well...

I think there were some E3 summary videos that had at least a little bit of zaniness in it.

When one of my now favourite Youtube channels points out how this generation seems to be trending towards Open World Sandboxes, it's hard not to notice. Particularly the Japanese, who have now made MGS, FF, and Zelda go open world. I have to say I did enjoy the implementation in MGS where that change does meaningfully impact gameplay. Many Western counterparts seemingly fail to innovate in that regard.

I've just gotten Overwatch and it is a whole lot of fun. Although it can't help but see that the game is a big pastiche of existing games and media. DOTA and Team Fortress 2 being the most obvious, and the reveal trailer had Disney's The Incredibles just oozing off it.

Before that I was still playing Bloodborne, I'm going for the Platinum Trophy which means I'm gonna slog through the Chalice Dungeons. I'll want to clean up DSII's DLC as well, but it turns out I've lost my old save. Maybe it'll be a good challenge just to do the bare minimum to access the DLC areas.

In my impatience, I bought an expensive video card which I didn't need, but I couldn't cancel the order for. I'll likely end up returning it, and going one tier lower, of which those cards are just nearly about to release. I mean I don't even plan to play something like The Witcher 3 or anything.

Speaking of The Witcher 3, how are you liking it? I think it would have been something I'd enjoy back in the day, but now the whole story driven experience just doesn't hold my attention. It's in a stark contrast to Souls games that give a bare minimum motivation (clear the fog, defeat the four lords, find a cure for your character, etc.), and are so gameplay focused that the only cutscenes are just to introduce you to bosses. I mean I've sat through games like Kotor and Final Fantasy, yet what I played of the Witcher 2 just didn't keep me coming back.

The lack of details on the PS4.5 and Xbox One point Five have me on edge. I mean it'd be a real slap in the face if not half of what was originally announced at E3 2013 to sell the original consoles, to then say that now the optimal experience is on another new box that cost as much as the investment of the original consoles at launch. I know I've already spent more than both the new consoles will probably be on a new PC, but the freedom to dictate when you want to change your own hardware seems more reasonable now with what we might be facing. Now you need to buy new hardware if you don't want this game shown at E3 to be playing at stable frames, but doesn't come close on the original PS4.

It's that time of year again, another E3 write up

The only conference I could catch live was Sony's in the middle of the day. Wasn't focusing too hard but it seemed like they definitely know how to put on a show. I was thinking the first song the orchestra was playing was tied to some major series. Even I felt excited at the GoW reveal even though I don't really like GoW very much now. When they did that triple vaporware revival last year, I can tell they know what the audience wants (if we get it is another story). Most of the stuff that appeals to me is a 2017 release at best; most of them were just up in the air. Crash remake makes me happy and sad, sad that it had to retread old content and sad that this year's Ratchet remake was very bland. Kojima comes out on stage and presents his game that we know nothing about, is it an action game, horror game, exploration game, etc. I'm going to have to peg it at an early 2018 release at best. But at least it's totally new and not Metal Gear. Kojima seems reinvigorated with creativity not having business pressures to keep going back to MGS.

Now for stuff that does have concrete dates, it'll be a crowded fourth quarter this year with FFXV and then The Last Guardian. Not that hyped for TLG but it should be good, I love SotC after all. What I thought would be a PT successor turns out to be RE7. It seems like they are the only ones that want to really invest in VR, with the whole game being playable in VR, as opposed to all of these small scale projects with the big name attatched to it (FFXV, Arkham, Battlefront, etc.). RE7 having a concrete date is also great. The predicted DMC5 didn't come true unfortunately.

Glad Scalebound is finally confirmed for PC, it makes me uneasy to think that there's just one or two games that I want that require a whole 'nother console to play. It'd be like Bloodborne if I didn't already have the PS4.

Apparently the new Zelda will be a return to form, harkening back to the NES Zelda where you're just dropped into the world with no instruction. It better be bloody amazing; first Wind Waker HD was meant to tide us over ("thank you for your patience", and then they do Twilight Princess HD ("thanks again for patience", and now the Wii U doesn't actually have its own exclusive Zelda now that its cross-platform with NX.

Bloodborne? Amazing. Another one of those games that have voluntarily made me come back and beat it. The game and DLC happened to be on special recently so I just picked it up. The DLC is just being cruel to me though, so I might just do a quick replay of the main game while I'm at it. Turns out I've missed some optional areas too.

I'm back on Bloodborne, sometimes these games are just very obtuse but I've figured it out. So I was stuck on the Darkbeast Paarl boss, but it turns out defeating him only unlocked a shortcut back to an area I already beat. Futhermore I thought I had exhausted all the routes, but I actually needed to go back to the place that got me transported to the Hypogean Gaol in the first place. Not that that was clear, since apparently when you first activate a certain enemy in the world, any of them can transport you to the Gaol, but the one most people encounter is supposed to be just outside the Cathedral Ward lamp. But I encountered it in the area after dropping down the wooden planks, which I never actually did the intended way the first time around, because the second last drop is almost a leap of faith, which I never found out about. So I was actually meant to go back to the area after the plank drop, to get an alternate route to open a gate in the Cathedral Ward. Sadly, I only saw the route after buying the key because I was just so resigned at this point. It turns out I've been clearing a bunch of optional areas... And it doesn't help that I'm picking this up again after a year long hiatus

After Bloodborne I think I'll go back to DSII DLC since I paid in full for the Season's Pass, then I'll probably go back to Bloodborne DLC. I might just put DS3 on the backburner until the GotY edition is out too. I'll probably burn out again after BB and DSII!

Overwatch is also piquing my interest, something I might get with the new GPU. The reviews have been good, although so were SC2 and D3 reviews and they absolutely did not have the same staying power of the original Blizzard classics. Many fans have noticed a decline since WoW and the Activision merger. But maybe Blizzard is just better off not recreating classics and instead focusing energy on new games, I mean Hearthstone for what its worth is a great multiplayer game. What I know of Overwatch is that its like TF2 with the character traits and skills like a MOBA, which sounds like an interesting concept.

Very tempted towards getting Dark Souls III right now, but at least it'll wait until I get the new GPU for my PC. Recalling that month of Uni holiday which I spent all on DS1, I'm pining for that same experience again, and supposedly DS3 is all about being circular and revisiting DS1.

Yet I still have Bloodborne and DSII DLC to do (and it turns out you have already beating BB!) Watching all this DSIII footage online isn't helping, haha.

I'd definitely recommend the HD Collection over the new remake. The story suffers due to all those extra characters. There isn't a conflict between Ratchet and Clank (the main character development in the original game), and there's no more funny man, straight man humor dynamic between them, so Clank really serves no purpose in the new story. Instead of focusing on Chairman Drek as the villain, now there's three villains who all feel inconsequential. The more I think about it, the worse it gets.

I don't really mind the extended media that much, but the first anime episode of FFXV Brotherhood is just has too many anime tropes and cliches. A full CG film would be something I want for say the FFX series, but as I said the main FFXV game isn't even out yet. I want to have immersed myself in the FFXV world with a 50 hour game first instead of starting with a 2 hour movie.

Nintendo's had a big day on the internet for some reason. They revealed the NX release date (a console still referred to by codename), the upcoming Zelda info went along with that, announced a smartphone plan, and put out a Humble Bundle. Following on from the successful fan communication with Nintendo Directs, it seems like Nintendo really wants to win back the gaming populace.

Anyway it'll be back to SFV for me, but for some reason while playing R&C, I was thinking about wanting to play Type-0 again for some reason... And now that I'm back with R&C, I might finally knock Tools of Destruction and Crack in Time off my backlog!

EDIT: It took me having to read an opinion piece on Vooks to realise, but all that Nintendo news has really cemented the idea that the Wii U was a flop. The Wii U won't even have an exclusive mainline Zelda game. They put out Wind Waker HD to "tide the fans over", and two years after that they also put out Twilight Princess to tide the fans over again. Now Zelda Wii U is being positioned to sell the new console, which I hope doesn't have some awful gimmick that is barely utilized and increases the production cost to make the RRP uncompetitive.

So I spent all of Saturday playing the new R&C... And I'll have to say I'm a little disappointed. The writing and story have taken a dive, presumably because the movie is going to contain all of that. But the game itself now has far too many characters, none who are really fleshed out. It may have been because I chose hard mode, but in most situations I found myself repeating the tactic of putting down as many autonomous weapons as possible, then picking the right weapon for the remaining enemies. The influence of modern shooters still seeps in a bit, whereas the original R&C basically auto-aimed in your general direction, which let you focus more on movement and dodging enemy fire. But in this game, the screen can get so chaotic and filled with so many elements, it can be hard to really do that, hence my strategy outlined above. In retrospect, playing my R&C HD Collection would have been a more appropriate nostalgia bomb I think. I really didn't think it could happen, but the extra graphical fidelity and detail works against the gameplay...

That big Final Fantasy Uncovered event happened, and although I am relieved that the game is finally going to release, that event was a little off-putting... The marketing extravagance the game will receive reminds me a bit too much of the triple A landscape that has been weighing heavily on the games industry. So Square partnered with Audi to make a custom car that is one of a kind and not being sold... The game is getting tie-in media before the game itself has a chance to prove itself (unlike FFVII, which received spin-off media after it cemented itself in gaming culture.) I really thought I'd be one to hop on a FFXV Collector's Edition, but the Australian price was $400 (if you were able to put an order in), and the package's marquee item is a figurine that will likely be readily available separately. The artbook is really the only thing I want, but I remember being at pop culture conventions and Final Fantasy artbooks are probably the most readily available artbooks out there. I'm quite glad not to pre-order any special edition, and just pick up the game itself for cheap by price matching Big W or Target.

Hey Daniel, it's been a while! Hope you've been good.

I've filled up most of the past few months with Street Fighter V. I went to a monthly fighters gathering two weeks after the SFV release date, and was promptly schooled
I think I'm getting better, but I still feel like there's a rift in my understanding of the game and how to progress. I still play it here and there, but now I've just diluted my focus...

By getting Ratchet and Clank PS4 today on a whim
I wasn't even really set on getting it on Day One, but a few days ago I saw the Digital Foundry PS2 to PS4 comparison video and all the memories came right back. Even though R&C1 is the most rudimental and least mechanically polished compared to R&C2 and 3, somehow I remember far more of number one than the others. I find out that the launch price at most places was $49 (Target has it for $44, and JB did the price match for me), so there I was finding myself making the transaction to purchase the game... I know I'm going to have a good time though; nostalgia bombs can be pretty amazing. I remember when I played through FFX HD two years ago, I was just totally compelled to play the game from start to finish, something that's not that easy today as we both know!
I thought I was doing well sticking to my rules, but I always find myself breaking them. One rule was not to buy a game if I already had something backlogged that was very similar in genre, moreso if it's from the exact same series (I own R&C Tools of Destruction and A Crack in Time, and also the HD Collection). I stuck with my rule for Dark Souls III, but I just had to make the concession for Ratchet and Clank. It's one of the series that defined the PS2 era for me, and one of those fond series from my youth. HowLongToBeat also says it's only 10 hours so it's a quickie.

In the same vein I'm also interested in Star Fox Zero for even more nostalgia hits!

I also finally decided to put down money on a PC. Kogan was doing a special on Intel processors, so I dug in and ordered one, and now I've got myself a $1000 PC without a graphics card, haha! The reason for that being that the new generation of cards from both manufacturers is slated to release in June, so not too far now. With the rumors of a more powerful PS4 becoming more and more concrete, it seems like I haven't totally made the wrong move (I wanted a PC earlier but held off because the overlap with the PS4 performance and library was a bit too close).

Glad to see another backlogger get hyrule warriors legend. IGN just posted a video recently saying the worst games of 2016 and hyrule warriors legend was one of them but after beating it today, I was sad to see them shit on it.

I play it on my new 3ds xl and it plays so much like the wii u version minus the graphics downgrade and everything is intact, plus adding new things. It is such a great port and how they manage to port an entire wii u game without any restriction on levels and such is an accomplishment.

I hope it is a good monster hunter style game. I was looking forward to buying Mario and luigi paper jam but the price was too high for a 3ds game. I live in Canada and our dollar is bad so games are more expensive. Americans can pay 39.99 but we have to pay 49.99 for it and it's terrible.

Luckily I have a gift card so it may work after all.

I am doing fine, the year just started and I finished a few games, bought a couple but kept the + in progress not in negative like all the years.

It will go down a couple once I get ff explorers like you are. Maybe we should play together hwen you get it.

I also played yokai watch but I got bored so I got rid of it and moved on.

So I've done it.

I've beat Yakuza 4. Watching those videos by HyperBitHero (even though I knew most of the content) got me hyped up to just finish off the game. I guess one hour of a guy gushing about the series just spurred me on, haha.

It ended up being quite quick if you avoid the substories. Most chapters ended up being, walk from A to B, cutscene, walk from B to C, cutscene, and then get into a fight. Some chapters didn't even have fights. This structure also feels similar to a lot of the substories too. I did try to play some of the mini-games that were originally cut in Yakuza 3, but I feel that the original intention of avoiding some content was justified. One of the cut games was mahjong, which has the weirdest scoring and rules system, and some of the tiles have numbers in Japanese which can end up being utterly confusing. There's also the Japanese chess game, which seems to play just like chess, but again the playing pieces are differentiated by Japanese characters.

So after having finished it I can't say I'm quite as hyped as after I saw those videos though. The combat, although fun to jump back into after the 3 year hiatus, got old quite quickly again. The substories also present themselves at the strangest times. There's something going down with the bad guys, but wait, some construction workers need curry! I will admit there is an opportunity to avoid them, but the OCD part of me can't let it go
I'd have to agree with the Zero Punctuation review too, in that the story does get a little nutty later on.

Anyway, I'm glad. Not so much that I can cleanly go into Yakuza 5, but more in the fact that I have the slate of the series wiped clean for now. If I do get the Yakuza itch again, I might just go straight to Yakuza 0, or Kiwami if that makes an English release. Besides Yakuza 6, I totally forgot about Kiwami, which is meant to be a remake of Yakuza 1 using Yakuza 0's assets.

Sounds good that you've been able to get into Xenoblade. To me it really feels as though some of it's popularity and praise is really attributed to the great JRPG drought of last-gen, and the lack of third-parties putting out games for the Wii. I'm sure it's a good game, but I don't think I could say it's deserving of being hailed as a "classic." What I'm hearing about Xenoblade X sounds similar, good not great. Supposedly a MMORPG style quest structure really bogs it down.

Turns out Xenoblade has been the only game to be "New" 3DS exclusive since it's introduction. I knew it wasn't really going to get much support, but I didn't think it would stop at one game... All eyes will be on the NX in 2016 too, I'm interested in what Nintendo will have to reveal. Although I must say Nintendo has been in a slump since the Wii. I can recall fond memories of the N64 and GameCube, but the Wii and Wii U really don't have much identity in their libraries.

After Battlefront had me pining for Star Wars games with more depth, I watched a video by Super Bunnyhop recommending the X-Wing/TIE Fighter series, which I did not know was totally different from the Rogue Squadron series. It's actually a Flight Sim series, which brings along depth, and also a dedicated control scheme with a Joystick recommended, and I must say I'm a sucker for dedicated control schemes. Steering Wheels for racers, Arcade Sticks for arcade games, plastic instruments for rhythm games, I just love them all!
And now I discover Flight sticks, which might just be what gaming career needs in this time of stagnation.
The price for entry is also lower than everything else previously mentioned; it's about $60 to get the stick that Logitech makes.

Back to the backlog, it seems like DLC is an even more difficult thing to deal with. I remembered I'm still supposed to get back to The Evil Within to finish off what I got with the season's pass, and also the same goes for Dark Souls II's season pass.

Then comes 2016. I'll be doing The Witness in January, Street Fighter V in February, and supposedly Persona 5 and Final Fantasy XV seem to be strong contenders for a mid-year release.

Let's hope the next year treats you better!

I do see the Chibi-Robo games being mentioned here and there (maybe it's the Gamecube one that people like), so it's interesting that it's gotten a new entry on the 3DS.

I had a bit of a desire to finish some of my Full Price/Day One Purchase games I got this year, so I've been trudging along with Project Zero. I'd definitely recommend against looking at this game entirely, if by chance you do find yourself in the mood for Fatal Frame, check out Fatal Frame's 1-3 on the American PSN Store. Damn, another horror series tapering off after the initial trilogy... (looking at Silent Hill...)

Probably should also look into getting Bloodborne and/or Type-0 back in the PS4. I was actually quite interested in the concept of Type-0 (being an Action RPG and a FF at the same time). Bloodborne also gets mention of being the best PS4 exclusive of the year, then again the exclusives don't seem to be the battleground for this generation of games. I also caught Bayo 2 and W101 after severely enjoying DMC3 and 4 again this year, so they ought to get some play time. I also convinced myself to get a Wii U Pro Controller because it was "on special" (although not that special, just $50), so that's gotta get some use.

Aside from that, the impulse buys seem to be mostly under control. I've gotten better at ignoring Steam sales and the like too.

After the recent release of Yakuza 5, I watched a video outline of the series on Youtube by HyperBitHero (who has some good watches on his channel). After that I felt re-invigorated to get back into Yakuza 4, although I've left the game for so long I've really lost track of the story, haha. The localization of the series has really gotten confusing; it turns out Yakuza 0 has been out for several months and Yakuza 6 is the one in development.

I would agree I would get a PC eventually, but this year I tried the flimsiest of reasons to build one immediately. I thought I would build something in anticipation for the advent of the VR headsets, but common sense says that we should wait until the technology is actually publicly available first. A few times I came close to getting a PC, what stopped me was having to physically make the trip to get the parts, for something I wasn't going to put to use immediately
The next wave of GPU's and CPU's are slated for the second half of 2016, so I wasn't so sure if I could hold out for yet another generation of components.
