Combat is a tiny bit better but this overall time limit and forcing you to use specific monsters to open certain paths isn't enjoyable

I -loved- Automata! Life got in the way and also a wrist injury so I had to sideline it for a little while, but I just finished it up the other day and wow, I am still floored by that game. Definitely jump back in soon!

If you're talking about the part where there's a huge character shakeup, then yes, I've gotten that far. "Spam your strongest moves" really doesn't make for engaging combat in my book; battles become tedious roadblocks instead of worthwhile challenges requiring strategy and skill.

I didn't even realize there were multiple routes I could have taken; I just followed whatever path seemed to progress the story. The only time I remember having much of a choice about anything was breaking into Viper Manor, where I took Korcha's boat because it seemed like stealth would be preferable to a frontal assault (and also, I couldn't figure out what the game wanted me to do to access the manor any other way). Having skimmed a walkthrough, I'm actually kind of annoyed that there were other choices I didn't even realize I could have made, which would have resulted in a little more satisfaction over the direction of the first part of the game.

Consider Yourself a Hero: Majority of games are beaten
Sorry about that. Didn't mean to ignore you there. My husband is actually playing Ys VIII right now. It does look very interesting. The music is fantastic also. It does remind me of Star Ocean in a way. Like the newer Star Ocean games are designed similarly exploration wise. I may play it myself at some point. It has a very interesting concept as far as the plot and your goal.

Well, tonight's session with Chrono Cross was the very first time in about 30 hours of gameplay that I had genuine fun the entire time. All I've wanted this entire game is one character who (a) is remotely likable, (b) is actually worth using in battle, (c) has at least a minimally appealing visual design, and (d) has a legitimate reason for being a part of this quest. I've gone through DOZENS of characters, and tonight is the first time I've come across anyone who actually meets all four qualifications. And for reference, only three of the other characters so far have even come close.

I have issues with absolutely every aspect of the game, but by far my biggest issue is that I don't care about ANYTHING that's going on. I'm indifferent toward or outright dislike almost all of the heroes, and the few I've willingly had in my party have no stake in the success of the mission. They're only in my party out of gratitude for rescuing them or because they have some broad, nebulous goal that might get achieved along the way somehow. It's incredibly difficult to get invested in the story when the characters themselves are barely invested.

At least in Chrono Trigger, the silent protagonist demonstrates some heroic initiative in his nonverbal actions, and the very first conflict of the game sets off a chain of events that lead directly to the end of the game. Here, Serge is a soulless puppet who just does stuff because he's got nothing better to do. There's neither a sense of urgency nor a sense of direction driving me forward. I even feel bad about fighting a lot of the enemies and bosses, because most of them aren't even villainous or threatening—they're just blocking my path to the next plot point.

And the combat is my second biggest issue with the game—all that micromanagement gives the illusion of robust complexity, but after 30 hours of combat, I've survived every battle with the same formula: attack a bunch; cast a spell that hits everything; repeat, healing as needed. I've found little value in the support spells (half of them can't even hit their target reliably), and I have yet to encounter a fight where it's worth the effort to manage the color grid beyond "don't use the same color the enemy is using."

That's only scratching the surface. If it didn't have "Chrono" in the title, I would've stopped playing at least five times over by now.
