Oh! Those are sort of leftover.

When I first kept track on my backlog I wanted to play it in order of oldest to newest releases (the flaw is that I'd NEVER play the newest games since I'd never catch up). I also considered playing longest to shortest, but that's exhausting and then short games are neglected. So I sort of blended them all together.

I used to have four slots I picked games by: [NEW] [RETRO] [RANDOM] [LONG]. New would be the newest by release date, retro the oldest. Random was a fortune cookie pick. Long was the longest time to beat from HowLongToBeat.com - I used to have my whole backlog entered there as well, so you could sort by all of these things.

I eventually expanded it to 8 slots and made a banner each time I picked new games. Something like New, Old, Random, long, most, least, lowest, highest

Most was a randomly chosen game from the platform that had the most
Least was the same, but platform with the least
Lowest and highest were based off of average community ratings given to the games. Also from HowLongToBeat, I could sort the backlog by rating. I'd pick the one at the top and the one at the bottom.

It really went from the edges of the backlog inward, which was kind of fun. Random was sort of there to at least give it a chance of picking something that wasn't on an outer edge, but scheduling 8 games at a time in advance was a little much I think.

Indeed it is! Sometimes I think The Backloggery is secretly my favorite game.

It seems that you're also a fan of such rules yourself :P

I've gotten much more relaxed on my Backloggery lately. I'm getting older and I'm a working adult, so I'm starting to appreciate not spending time on games I don't really enjoy all that much. Most notably I now allow myself to just view a walkthrough/playthrough of a game online to get a if it's a game I own and didn't really want to play (yet still had some interest in keeping it as a collectible / it's digital so I couldn't get rid of it / I wanted to know the story without forcing myself to play it).

The end result is that I can make a lot more progress since I can watch these while I work, which opens up many more hours in a day for me to kill the backlog. Eventually it should filter down to a slimmer backlog of things I really want to spend my time with. It feels a little bit like cheating, but I figure backlogs are ultimately personal lists and personal goals anyhow.
