★★★★★ Are you one of those people that has a passing interest in learning the guitar? Perhaps you've dabbled with Rockband/Guitar Hero but want something more geared towards learning how to play. Look no further than Rocksmith, it has everything you need. The lessons are basic and sometimes hard to grasp, but you can make the leap from absolute beginner to fairly competent with a little dedication. There's even a few arcade style mini-games thrown in. Did I mention the custom songs? Oh boy.

Tortured myself a little more with yet another Amiga platformer ported to the SNES, Alfred Chicken. What's the game like? It's like shoving hot coals up yourself then sitting down for three hours while someone spits in your eyes. Clocked the game, but missed out on a few collectables, can't say I'm looking forward to replaying.

Managed to find a translation and patch Bishoujo Sexy Derby, the awful unlicensed hentai horse racing game for the Famicom Disk System. Well I say game, but this barely fits the bill if we're being honest, perhaps the frantic tapping of the A button is supposed to be a metaphor for something?

How about something good? I do own some actual decent games, I promise, Like Thunder Spirits on the SNES for example. I thought this was complete until I realised there was a hidden options screen (why do they do this?) that offers a higher difficulty level, definitely one to return to.

Dug out the Turbo-Graphics 16, I've only got three games for this, (time to rectify?) so I blew the dust off and did a clean Street Fighter 2' Champion Edition run through with Ken, felt the mood. This is NOT the definitive version of the game, but at least it's not awful. Speaking of:

Two SNES word beaters in the can, Dennis (hello again, Mr. Amiga. Would you like a cup of warm piss?) and Bram Stoker's Dracula. I hope the creators of the latter were adequately compensated for their efforts, and if not I'd be happy to pop round and heap out lashings of "praise".

2020 Super Baseball and Hebereke's Popoon on SNES completed, as is Comix Zone for the Genesis, been working on that last one for while, many years in fact. Sleep now, sweet cart.

Two biggies this week, the SNES Star Wars sequels, Super Empire Strikes Back and Super Return of the Jedi. Tough, tough games. The saving grace of Jedi is the password system, which eases the pain of the final levels a little. What a way to drop the ball on an otherwise stellar trilogy of games.

Played a lot of F-Zero and did everything I could, first in all races on the highest rank. Short of trying to beat my post-30 seconds lap times I don't see any reason to come back.

This week's Epic store freebies added to the ever growing list, ABZU, a Subnautica-like exploration game? and the FPS Rising Storm 2: Vietnam. If there's a single player campaign I might give this a shot

Lots of SNES chuff this week, some real stinkers, but at least The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, The Adventures of Dr. Franken, and Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems are done and dusted. Why do I put myself through this pain?

Completed Nosferatu as well, that tips its hat so heavily towards Prince of Persia it's not even funny, good game, hard bosses. Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt is finally done, that's one nightmarishly hard game in places.

On the actual good SNES games front, I marked off Super Star Wars and Pilotwings, sing hallelujah.

Some interesting finds this week, a couple of SNES hacks cropped up on my radar. Some context: The early SNES games suffered quite horribly with slowdown, a case of the programmers ambitions exceeding the hardware. Later games overcame the limitations by including extra chips in the carts themselves, boosting performance. A Brazilian coder by the name of Vitor Vilela figured out a way to create a virtual SA-1 chip and patch it into a rom, letting the hardware or emulator interpret it as naturally being part of the game. As a result a 3.5mhz game can see performance jump as high as 10mhz, completely eliminating game crippling slowdown. So far he's only done Contra III and Gradius III but work continues apace and hopefully we'll see a bunch more in 2021. A few other people have picked up on his work, there's a patch for Mega Man X, but I can't get that to run.

Also in rom hacking, Final Fight: Guy has now been elevated from a poor port into a must have SNES game thanks to Rotwang's two-player patch. The best part is the game puts Cody into the mix too, just like we always wanted. It's not totally there yet, the enemy AI ignores player 2, there's a few sprite glitches, the Cody ending is missing, and the character select screen is a WiP. But all three characters are fully playable. Real talk: There's a lot of ugly drama regarding the hacking groups and censorship which I'm not going to get into here, needless to say this sort of infighting helps nobody.

Got Bruce Lee for the ZX Spectrum, because why the hell not? And this week's Thursday freebie from the Epic Store, something called Pikuniku which is added to the ever growing list.

Clocked two of the Ranma 1/2 games this week. Quite a while to go before they're completed thanks to the roll call of many characters, but it's a start. Soccer Kid and Super Smash TV for the SNES beaten too. Have to come back to those, but got no idea how I'm supposed to complete the second turbo run-through of Smash TV, it's insane.

Finally beat Blasphemous. Watched a streamer friend of mine whiz through it making it look easy, so i figured I'd give it a shot.

For some reason I thought it'd be good to play Captain Novolin. Next time I think I'll stick insulin needles in my eyes instead.

Dragon: The Bruce Lee story, Accelebrid, and Ashita no Joe completed without too much fuss.

Another biggie this week was Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts, what a nightmare. There's a ton of slowdown, making it a real trial to get through. I foresee a similar struggle with the SNES Star Wars games. Badly optimised run and gun platform games for the win.

Mastered Rush 'n Attack. Not as hard as I was fearing. Those paratroopers though, yeesh. I remember when I used to play the ZX Spectrum port of this, Green Beret, I don't think I ever managed to pass level 2, but then I was about ten years old at the time. I think I'll have to find a copy of that again, and soon.

Only one new game this week, RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, another Thursday freebee from the Epic Store. I might play it! Oh, but look at that, 1000th game added to my Backloggery.

So this Kung-Fu NES rumour. Is this true? Beating the game 50 times. That's 250 levels, or about 4 and half hours of gameplay. It's going to be a hell of a slog only to find out the rumour is a load of rubbish.

Well, I've always labelled the game as 'null' anyway, I didn't think it could be beaten, it just cycled forever. So I guess I could have a go and reach level 250. At that point, even if the Sylvia fight is a myth, I can put the game to bed and consider it completed. Fair.

*edit

Archived Twin Galaxies forum post reports it's a load of crap. A four hour+ Youtube playthrough video confirms. It'd be pretty easy these days to peak into the game anyway. Oh well.

Weekly Update: #0001

Hey it's Sunday. I had nothing planned, figured I could turn this into a goal-orientated update thing.

Purchase-wise Got hold of Football Manager 2020, Stick it to the Man, and another copy of Watch Dogs. All free on the Epic launcher. I had a quick look at FM2020 and I wasn't feeling the mood. Maybe I'll delve into it properly later.

Completion-wise I absolutely annihilated the NES version of Probotector (Contra). Beat it without losing a life over an eight hour slog. So that's another Mastered in the bag. I would love to tackle the Japanese version sometime. (Yeah, yeah, add it to the list.)
I also completed the rather frustrating Appleseed on the SNES. Very poorly designed game, and the final level is utter bollocks. Had to resort to a Youtube walkthrough. Glad I never have to bother with that again.

I'm getting into the habit of noting hi-scores. Let's see how long I can keep that up.

Off now to have a porn star martini and a slice of cake to celebrate my wins.

Picked up some new stuff over the last couple of months. A PS2 with a folder full of games, a boxed copy of Metal Gear Solid 3. and a Master System with a Japanese copy of Bubble Bobble.

I want to finish work on the games room, which has stalled because The Wife is currently using it to work from home during the pandemic, so can't really use it much. The comfee chair I bought to put in the corner I've decided is too big, it needs to go. With that out of the way I can put in a couple of Kallax shelving units and really make the room work.

The second-hand games shop in my town has closed down I'd gotten to know the owner Scott a little bit, and bought loads of quality gear from him, but unfortunately he couldn't make ends meet. I wonder how Super Tomato in Cardiff is doing during this crisis.

Got about two dozen Windows ported Neo Geo games as part of the Twitch Prime giveaways, but I'm not going to add them to the list. I'm never going to play them seriously as I loathe the frontend, the lack of joypad support, and the resolution. So disappointing.

*Edit
Bugger it. I may never get around to playing them, but as I'm adding all the other Twitch freebies I might a well put them in.

That itch.io bundle, Jesus. It's up to over a 1000 games now, and for a worthy cause too.

This should keep me busy for a year or two.

Fab! Yeah, my friend and I were shocked by how sturdy and tedious the last few bosses were. Coming into a fight with loads of extra lives and all the best weapons should give you an advantage, not just your only hope at winning!

Greetings! My friend and I recently tried out (and just barely failed to beat) Robocop Versus The Terminator, so I was curious to see someone else's opinion and popped by here.

It looks like you're interested in a lot of the same types of games I am, and I see a number of games in your collection that I haven't seen on anyone else's Backloggery outside of my own. Would you mind a Multitap add?
And that's the bottom line...
