★★★★★ The weakest Souls game, but still a great experience, still worthy of five stars, simply due to the fact that it is better game than most four star games here. Most bosses were awful and the game is very short and finally the World tendency system is not best implemented, but the level design is incredible, reminded me a lot of early DS1, and the characters were all lovely as per usual in Fromsofts games. It is still a very good game that started one of my favourite video game franchise!

Consider Yourself a Hero: Majority of games are beaten
I've actually played on every platform except Xbox One. My original run was on the 360 when they made the game free on Games With Gold, did a few co-op sessions with friends and had an invasion here and there but that was actually the last game I ever played on the platform, before I let my gold membership lapse and never renewed it. My second run was on the PS3, my co-op run with my girlfriend right after we started dating in mid-2015. I was genuinely happy that the online remained as active as it did all those years later, but it honestly made certain parts of the run a complete war of attrition. It didn't really start to kick in until the end of Anor Londo; I literally had more trouble making it to the boss room than I did with the boss itself; there was one guy in particular who would just abuse Quelaag's Furysword in lag, I literally could not move if I got hit once. After a point I would just let myself die if I got invaded, because it was always some hardcore veteran who'd clearly spent years watching guides and all that, even on the off chance I did beat them I'd just get invaded again 5 minutes later. By the time we got to Sif, we both had to disconnect just to even make it to the boss door because his area was the PvP hotspot. No matter how much I leveled my health or got better armor, I would always get oneshot by a teleport backstab. Seriously, making a hornet ring dex build trivializes so much of that game because you can just mindlessly mash R1 until you latch onto their back out of nowhere, I even did it myself by accident a few times.

I never actually played the remaster on PS4 because honestly it felt like a halfassed remaster when I had already played the PC version with DSFix, which is more or less the same thing, 60fps and all. I did end up getting it on Switch which was a nice novelty.

I also recognize that it's from the PS1 Lain game. At least, I think so. I've always meant to try that game out.

Oh yeah, I can understand that. I haven't gotten too much into Fallout 1 and 2 yet, although I do own both games on GOG. So hopefully someday, I'll pick them up. I know MotherKojiro was able to get into the first game, so I'd love to give it a fair shot. I don't think I knew that about New Vegas though, so that's pretty cool! I'm looking forward to it.

Heh, I remember Caddicarus. I used to watch him a while back. I liked Nightmare Creatures a lot, but it was also very frustrating at times. I could never get past a certain point, so I never fully completed it. It's a tough game. It had such a cool atmosphere for the time, though. I played the sequel, too, but I remember not liking it nearly as much.

That's great to hear! The level design and vibe of the game is really what I liked about it too. While the level design may not be super complex, there's something about unlocking those shortcuts that's really satisfying. Honestly my love and appreciation for the game only grows as I replay it more, I love how they handled the combat. The trick weapons are easily my favorite combat mechanic Fromsoft has ever done. Every weapon is viable and with the transformations you essentially have two weapons in one! That's crazy the Lady Maria fight was your favorite, it's actually my favorite too! I've met very few people with that opinion as I feel most gravitate towards the Orphan of Kos as their favorite. Honestly any of the DLC fights could be someone's favorite and I'd respect that opinion because they're all so good. My main complaint with the game overall is the bosses probably. The Old Hunters has plenty of great bosses but I feel the main game is lacking unfortunately. There are still some bangers though like Father Gascoigne and the final boss!

I actually did know about it being made by the Dark Souls devs, but I knew Bloodborne was stand alone and I got it for free so I went ahead and just played it first. Don't regret it at all, it actually made it easier because I didn't have any established Souls muscle memory at that point. I still think for me personally it was the hardest though, if anything because it was my first. Going back to it nowadays it's definitely much easier though.

Have you thought about playing Sekiro? That's another From game that's absolutely incredible. I'd say my top 3 would be: 1. Bloodborne, 2. Sekiro, 3. Dark Souls 3, but it's a very close ranking and I could honestly interchange them.

Love the Lain avatar. Cool new color scheme, too.

Oh, cool! I remember watching my sister and a couple of friends play New Vegas when it was more new. I'd definitely try getting into that game over Fallout 3. I could never get into 3, for some reason, and I remember being at the PS3 lineup at launch. I was beyond hyped for it, but somehow it just didn't click with me at the time. I have both games on Steam, but might have to go for the GOG release if I have trouble running it. I heard Fallout 3 was made to be more compatible on GOG, so maybe New Vegas is the same.

Anything with Lovecraft inspiration is cool to me! Definitely something I'm going to have to put the time into, someday. It also reminds me of an old PS1 game called Nightmare Creatures. Similar kind of Gothic horror atmosphere. I can't say that one holds up all that well, though, so to play a game similar to it that actually plays well sounds more appealing to me lol.

I hope so as well, so far so good at least!

Oh man, PS2 is an amazing console to get that young. It was one of my first consoles as well, and playing Lego Star Wars on that thing is still one of my greatest memories. Even now I'm catching up on old PS2 games that I'm still loving today. Truly a masterpiece of a console.
Honestly yeah, that is probably for the best! I'd say most young adults don't even know the value of money so that's an extremely valuable lesson to learn that young! I'd say I learned pretty early on too, but mostly from observing other people's mistakes.

How are you liking Bloodborne by the way? I'm curious to hear your perspective as someone who has played the Souls games beforehand. Bloodborne was my very first even before the Souls games, so I have a special attachment to it!

Ah I feel ya. As much as I love sinking my teeth into a good single player game, I've always gotta have some kind of access to online for one reason or another. I forget if I ever told you, but I've actually played the entire Soulsborne series alongside my girlfriend of eight years. Granted I've done plenty of solo runs including my solo DS1 run on my YouTube. Don't get me wrong, conquering the games on your own is about as satisfying as it gets, but doing a full co-op run where you and your friends all make new characters and play start to finish is a magical experience. I recently played Code Vein with my gf as well, which is a lot more tailored to co-op. Truth be told, I've actually been phasing out larger-scale single player outings in favor of fighting games and MMOs; they kinda fit in my life schedule better and satiate my competitive spirit. That said, I generally hate Soulsborne PvP and don't blame you for not wanting to participate. Even on a good connection all people do is abuse lag and weapons with bad hitboxes. I felt no shame ganking button mashers in Elden Ring. My second DS1 run was miserable in that sense because I literally got invaded like every 5 minutes. Sure I could've just played hollow, but I spent a lot of time in CC and don't wanna go through the whole game looking like bacon.

Yeah thankfully the Pokedex was scaled back in the newer games. While some people miss certain Pokemon (hell, my all time favorite Mantine isn't included) but I'm honestly thankful that they made completing the dex a tangible thing. Getting all the starters, fossils, and legendaries was essentially impossible unless you were either rich and had tons of consoles, or had friends patient enough to sit there trading things over one by one. I was able to catch all the Pokemon I needed with my gf trading me the handful of Scarlet exclusives, and the DLC only added 100 more for a total of 500.

That's a great question!

I actually planned my next games out: Next up is Bayonetta 2 (Wii U), which I already had for quite a while thanks to the controversy around the 3rd entry, lol then after that, we have New Super Mario Bros. U (and New Super Luigi U), the only game of the NSMB series that I haven't played yet. Although I have yet to accquire that game somehow.
And then I am gonna end the year (probably) with Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, returning to the Final Fantasy Series since Final Fantasy X-2, excluding Dissidia Final Fantasy NT and maybe, finally, tackling the Platinum Trophy of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

And after that... I don't really know tbh, there are a lot of games I could look at. Maybe I could at my Steam games which are collecting dust on my account... or maybe look at BioShock: The collection, I always wanted to play Infinite (and the prequels). Or take a look at how bad Saints Row really is... or maybe even another Final Fantasy game. Whatever. I'll find something

I don't have my physical copy anymore, but I did re-download it on PS5 and still had all my old saves backed up through cloud save. Might go back and finish one of those runs one day, as I only ever actually beat the game once. The DLC was some of the toughest Fromsoft content I've ran, especially Laurence. Dude has NG+ levels of health, I could barely dent him even with my upgraded loadout.

I'mma be real with ya I totally forgot to update this for a while. I'm getting more use out of my Switch lately with Zelda and Pokemon, actually almost completed the 'dex in Violet! Been trying out WoW Classic as well, a very different experience for me as I never played the original in its heyday. I'm waiting on Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising to drop in November so I can get back on my FGC kick!

Yeah man, I will never give up on this site! Even if I'm gone for a while I'll always come back to it. I've got too much nostalgia on here to ever leave it for good, and soon enough I'll have been on this site for 10 years. I joined when I was only 13!

Here's to another 5.

What was your favorite game before getting into FromSoftware?

I've had people try to get me into these games several times, starting with Dark Souls 1 back in 2019. I did play Bloodborne once briefly at a friend's place, and it left a good impression on me. I think that's the game I want to get into the most. I really like the Gothic horror setting and atmosphere it has going for it. As long as it's still free on Plus, by the time I get to it lol.
