It feels a little dated. My biggest complaint is that many mandatory events are time related. As such, you’ll be spending time letting the in-game clock to tick away before you can advance. I remember there being a point where I made dinner and did laundry while the game was running because of having to wait.

Other than that, it was fine. The combat is enjoyable, being able to walk into any business is unique, and the story looks to be going to interesting places.

Oh, and forklift racing.

Shenmue: It is a nice look into what was considered a technical marvel at the time. The actual gameplay is quite repetitive and you’ll have to just wait around a lot. Play this for the story - that is what really matters here.

To go more in-depth, the game is essentially a “life-simulator.” Uh, but with martial arts battles. You get a job, can take care of a kitten, waste your money on capsule toys, play arcade games, talk to everyone, and practice fighting for the various battle sequences in the story. Like I said, definitely ahead of the times in terms of providing a realistic world.

I’ve heard the second one is better. It apparently ends on a cliffhanger that will finally be resolved with Shenmue III this year.

I also have Yakuza 0 to play some time in the future. I think I want to tackle Shenmue II before getting to it, though. The technical leap might be far too great.
