So far I've only watched Mike play it. It was thoroughly entertaining to watch! I'm surprised at how well they pulled off the color scheme--it really is just black, white, red and yellow, but it's still pretty easy to tell what's what. Motion helps a lot with that. There's a huge comic book motif going on that I didn't get from the pre-release hype; it's pulled off well. Not overdone, not underdone, and well balanced throughout the game.

The game has quick-time events. There is one particular boss fight that reminded me very strongly of God of War--only instead of "Press square! NOW PRESS TRIANGLE!" you get prompts for how to waggle. It works surprisingly well--not only does it make more since to swipe the remote up when your character is delivering a right-handed uppercut, but playing a brawler is pretty energizing--there's something right about moving around as part of the game. It doesn't seem overdone, but you'd have to ask Mike about that.

The camera and lock-on/aiming system is a bit wonky--Mike's comment was that it works in boss fights and not so much leading up to them. The plot's a joke and the main character is a sad sack of flesh. He's made out to be badass to the point of ludicrousness, but the game doesn't appear to be aware of just how goofy he is. It does fit in with the comic book theme, though.

The game is conveniently set up into stages with a boss, as it's a sort of bloodsport set-up. I mention this because like with any sport, there are a couple men running inane commentary on the game as you progress through the level. They are fan-fucking-tastic. They make the game worthwhile alone.

4 hours to get through one round of the game, then you unlock stuff (double chainsaws!). Neither of us have beaten it a second time just yet (never been a fan of fighters or their derivatives, but I'll be playing this one). Whether or not to buy, rent, or ignore comes down to how much you like the genre, what price you can get it for, and how many people will be playing your copy.

I figured I'd come and join the fun over here.

I've been looking at Professor Layton and the Curious Village for a while and didn't know if it was worth a buy. How is it over all?

The battle mechanics & character stats are very different from most games, and the game itself doesn't explain it very well. There's a whole in-game menu dedicated to explaining it--which is certainly better than relying on the gamer having the manual--but it still has the WALL OF TEXT effect.

Fortunately, Mike explained a few things to me before I started my game. If you pump points into your character's attack, they won't hit harder, but they'll miss less--the idea being that Tails will never (never) be a tank. Put points into defense, they'll dodge better. Into luck, they'll crit & ambush more...and so on.

My primary issue with the game is that the special techniques are all rhythm based...and I got no rhythm. I especially dislike Tails/Cream, because their specials completely fail if you mess up just once, and Tails has no attack to speak of. Battles become a pain in the ass because there's no quick way to enter commands--I think they were trying to keep battles from getting boring, but really, entering the same commands over and over with the touch screen is much, much worse than mashing the A button. Or, say, setting tactics to "Show no mercy" and hitting one command per turn (DQ4 DS...).

The exploring is pretty fun, though, I like the TOSE-esque coloring, and it's a blast to be a jerk to all the jerks in my party. Also, Eggman is the best.
