Ys VIII - Lacrimosa of Dana
[38h : 50m] - Chapter 5

Updated about 6 years ago

☆☆★★★ I've always enjoyed the Ys series, it's one of the few JRPGs I can tolerate, but it's still a JRPG, it suffers from the same mindset as all the others. It's like they have a rulebook they must follow letter by letter with the same generic tropes, overused cutesy setting, and the same plot holes I've seen hundreds of times. Graphics are very outdated and the port is also pretty bad because of course it is. However, if you manage to look past all it's flaws, the gameplay can be very fun.

☆★★★★ A very enjoyable game and a good PC port. Sadly though, it suffers from your standard JRPG mindset: Cutesy stereotypes and underage kids saving the world and NPCs conveniently showing up at the exact moment and place, was cute for the first hundred time, but it gets annoying really fast. The characters are your standard anime-tropes, with plenty of cliché moments, but they all are memorable and actually quite lovable. They even have a superpower: "sensing" stuff convenient to the plot

☆★★★★ Happy and excited to finally play this again. Was part of my childhood and I have very fond memories of it. Unfortunately, it didn't age well and it looks ugly, plus, that Junction/Draw system is still stupid.

☆☆★★★ 17 hours in and the tutorial is still going, that's how convoluted this game is. Artes on top of combos on top of guard breaks on top of souls on top of status effects and then I gave up caring. But to be fair, it is a step up from the mess that was it's predecessor, with a more mature story, but just a bit as it's still full of cutesy tropes.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
[30h : 14m] Book I, Chapter III

☆☆☆★★ The only thing this game has going for it is the main heroine, with a sympathetic and fun personality. Other than that, this game is boring, generic and super linear. Every NPC conveniently "teleports" in unexpected places when the story calls for it, even if it's a maze full with monsters. They also seem to know instantly what happens continents away. The story is cliché and meaningless, gameplay is bland and the lore is needlessly convoluted. I don't think I'll be playing part 2

Master of Unlocking: Majority of games are completed
ah, I'm only about 5 hours into Berseria but it's already better than Zestiria I feel. I'll definitely get back into it (don't really drop games cause they cost $$) but I've been trying to catch up on some of my personal life stuff like school so I haven't been playing games as much as I'd like to! Though I'm not really that picky in what I play (I've played some pretty bad games over the years) so I might not be the best person to ask haha..

nice backlog you have as well.

Sleep: Not playing anything
I really enjoyed the series, but i have to take away some points for it for the drawn out nature / slow pacing. I get that it's to build you up in the world and characters and I do like that part of it, but some parts (especially the last few chapters of SC) were just too much. Would still recommend to any jrpg fan for sure though!

Yes, yes - play not watch. I did not abused that too much but felt like it was a necessity at times.

Anyway, have fun! See you around.

Hello!

Likewise, nice to meet you! The times of "too much time on my hands" are over but I still spend a good 10-20h a week playing video games. You can see my blog post here [Link] that explains how I dealt with my backlog. Having a wife that lets you play video games sure helps.

Anyway, your backlog doesn't even seem too bad! And a great selection of games, you good old games' junkie. You're up for a ride!
