I also prefer Machinarium—I'll take robots over plants any day—but I think Botanicula is a well-crafted game that doesn't entirely appeal to my sense of aesthetics.

The whole thing is very noisy, and it triggers my "dislike being in huge crowds" reflex, especially because all the sounds are made by people instead of standard instruments. The art isn't really my style, but my wife loves it, so another matter of taste. Same thing with the gameplay: most of the puzzles are pretty well-designed (that one animal assembly puzzle in the village is still atrocious), but I tend to prefer Sierra- and LucasArts-style adventures.
