Focus: Only playing one game
Hey guys! I've been gone from Backloggery for a while. I'm not dead, don't worry! I just got busy and games kinda fell to the wayside. I intend on getting back into tracking my backlog and finishing some games! However, for various reasons I don't want to go into, I don't go by this username anymore. And since username changes aren't something that is currently available, I made a new account. Feel free to add me over there, or don't. I had to sell a lot of games in the meantime due to money problems, so I'll have to go through what I've got still and my progress on all of those.

See you over there!

Focus: Only playing one game
So with the year getting close to being over, and nothing in the December launch lineup catching my interest, I think it's about time for me to give my games of the year. An important distinction to make is this is games I've played this year, not necessarily games that released this year. Anything with a in my memory card from this year qualifies so here we go!

5. Axiom Verge (Steam)
This game gave me that same feeling of exploration and isolation that the early Metroid titles did, and was an excellent example of what I wanted out of the genre.

4. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Wii U)
My first real dive into an open world experience and I have to say, it was really good. The world was interesting and fun to explore, and the story of a ruined Hyrule was a lot of fun to explore. It was good enough to make me buy it a second time on my Switch, so that says something.

3. Super Mario Oddessy (Switch)
The return to the Super Mario 64 style of gameplay with modern improvements was incredibly enjoyable. Don't get me wrong, the Galaxy games were great, as were 3D Land and World, but something about the exploration and open-endedness is so much fun. All of the different collectibles behind the purple coins are fun to collect.

2. Metroid: Samus Returns (3DS) / Another Metroid 2 Remake (PC)
This is kind of cheating, putting two games in the same slot, but AM2R and SR had essentially the same goal and achieved it in different ways. AM2R was a reimagining of Metroid II combining aspects from Super Metroid and Metroid: Zero Mission, whereas SR was a combination of Super, the Prime series, and Other M. Both did an excellent job of modernizing a very outdated game and bringing their own experiences to the table.

Honorable mention: Cave Story + (Switch)
This game haunted me as incomplete for years, and I finally beat it this year. I liked it a lot, but I've played a lot of it years before so I mostly was reexperiencing it.

1. Ori and the Blind Forest (Steam)
Oh boy! Another Metroidvania on the list! In all seriousness, despite being a Metroidvania, this game is so unique compared to the other two on the list. The huge focus on Ori's movement and his floaty nature just make the game fun to control. In particular, the bash ability is so satisfying to use once you get it and master it, and all of Ori's abilities compliment one another so well. Not to mention this game's amazing soundtrack and beautiful visuals make it my game of the year.

Dang, that's bad... Altough it's weird you found old data after restarting. It's possible RT64 is right, maybe the game saved to a different location than the default one. If not, I might be permanent software problem. I own a DS cartridge that just won't save progress no matter what and is stuck to the same save files. Of course, that cartridge is a lot older than BotW, and I don't know if this problem can apply to discs as well, I'm just guessing. I never experienced saving problems with any WiiU game.

I have never experienced this issue on any Wii U games. Do you have an external hard drive? Maybe the game saved to the system or the hard drive...? Just throwing out a guess.

Has anyone else had this happen? I opened up Breath of the Wild (Wii U version) today and all of my progress from yesterday didn't save. I know for a fact that I did save the game manually when I was done playing. I hope this is just a one-time issue, and not widespread because I'm not going to enjoy re-doing all of those sidequests I did yesterday. (I guess I'm lucky I didn't update my backlog yesterday)

I would totally see how you would think the game is lackluster if you just let Mario go through all the easy levels without playing any of the other additional content.

Have you collected all of the colored coins in Mario Run? That and Toad Rally is the real meat of the game. Plus there are three additional secret levels.

It doesn't make much sense to see a Pokémon colored in a certain way in a cutscene and then battle it with different colors, am I right? That's probably why shiny-locking exists.

Actually, in more recent games, some Pokémon can't be Shiny, and I think this applies to starters too.

You are still trying to get more Shinies? I thought anyone would get tired of SRing at 2!

Decided to head back to New Leaf, hm? I have been finding myself playing it a lot recently myself, all thanks to that update. It really gave the game an extra boost of life.
