Chapter 21. The chase sequences get worse. Still doesn't put a halt to thoughts re Deadly Premonition being quite the generational achievement, despite it all.

The rather lame helicopter breaks the imagery of Alex's one-inch strikes, buoyancy combined with low risk yet high straight-line speed philosophy.

The source would be Romero's twitter, of course. Would be a shame to revisit the charity map (inc in SIGIL 2?) without the charity aspect. Deliberately jarring played alongside Spear of Destiny AND there's no single episode structure for a warm up, but maybe it works. After all, DOOM really was id post-Wolf3D, not Spear.

Wolf 3D. Appreciating part of Wolf3D's design demands boosting the difficulty up/restrictions, combine with more-challenge maps for pain or something.

Updated about 2 years ago

a little more than trivia / for Wolf3D's 30th Anniversary: While it would make sense that Spear's level design was outsourced by iD/FormGen, is page 7 of GOG's reviews really the only place to say so? "Little known fact. My friend Larry Lytle (aka Darkstar) produced all the levels of Spear of Destiny". Wikipedia: "PC Zone quoted...top sales" isn't very useful. 6000 a year in -- www.dropbox.com/s/dr5o9j6sbhyozas/pzoneUKw.jpg?raw=1 -- shows the massive contrast for overseas IBM/PC.

Now this almost seems tangentially related to video gaming, notably so. Presumably someone putting too much faith into the pop culture power of TCGs (even more than, say, Pepsi or Resident Evil), but it is a Japanese-region PS1 game. Noticed the sponsored listing while keeping a tab open on a copies-stacking-up Toaplan Shooting Battle (prev owned) that didn't reach its reserve.

More crossover content below (permanently unusable items but not a virtual coaster/New state, Collector's Edition production line, early PC* releases in ziplock bags, Vintage, earlier era) *I do draw a somewhat unifying line through 'PC' in regard to the long view. I like the parody NES/FC trading cards that come with a CE I've ordered; I see one of the $100+ (...) classic-era LucasArts official repros has the very jokey boardgame printed out...

King of Dragon Pass (1999) One particular fav. Complementing it with something I value? While they would always be described as 'crude' there's something about these silhouetted counters in their unpunched layout that's missing even if put back together again. It's a signed copy sold to raise funds so the book is centre and I wouldn't swap any of the parts out.

There's some shots of (very) used counters on an ended Dec 16th eBay listing (which from the data took a long time to sell); both NG and the earlier game, or its 'A' side - White Bear & Red Moon - are said be having new modern versions.

Instead of burying these pics under a Sid Meier's Colonization (digital) entry, I'll post them here. A combination of who are these people!? buying years removed GT Interactive retail boxes at $$$; finishing XCOM EW; wondering whether I really have the more premium US ver of Monkey Island (perhaps mixed up with Fate); and definitely getting it wrong with a pre-crazy id Anthology backlog entry, thinking Gamer's Edge issues and mail order would be highly prized, even if just a disk barely with a #number. Zeitgeist or underground aspects being... secondary.

The lost (all the 'other' id titles are described as such in the above) Keen: [Link] + another up + Goodbye Galaxy etc.

'Course, if you're just going by 'relevance', demos and compilations would trump retail of e.g the much later non-groundbreaking JJR.

Anyway, UK pictures of self-published Laser Squad + x2 expansions w/ x2 paperwork, minus any padded envelopes; I'm no fan of bubble-wrap sale backgrounds (decent packaging should be a given; insta fingerprints more an issue w/today's temperature than wear), but it was there for other reasons.

RE: that featured Ars story and 'scandal'. The only real things which stand out to me are the ego aspect (presumably also why early Apple, TRS-80 and so on, Ultima fanbase post UO would be needed/conflated with PC 'Big Box' and some growing Facebook group), plus, in reading the reaction, the ubiquitous 'one man's treasure' disposition reflected, well, everywhere.

arstechnica.com/gaming/2022/06/inside-the-100k-forgery-scandal-thats-roiling-pc-game-collecting/

Some of the cocktail is new, as two of the following examples would be all about immediate, hard cash and not trust: eg. Metal Slug (1) NeoGeo home cart conversions being passed as the original, PCE***** (superior resources for factory printing + extras), semi-notorious $30000 US AES Aero Fighters 3, again community.

Fake wear on forgeries is the inverse of undisclosed 'restoration' on legit games, first screenshot primarily for avatar fondness, maybe – [Link] – [Link] – this trader (only recognisable from his blurb! $937 Zak) is in the not-great (sealed>crushing, business first, second and third quotes) PCGamer article linked from Ars as proof of demand.

Other statements are dubious. Amusingly (or not) "PC game collecting is niche, but" is verging on paraphrasing.
