☆☆☆★★ I'll admit that there's a fun game here at its very core. The movement feels excellent and the combat captures the best of X's shooting and Zero's swordplay. Sadly, the game just does a lot of things that bug me. Mechanics are poorly explained, mistakes are heavily punished, and the game discourages you from engaging with one of its most interesting features. Definitely play this with save states or save-assist if you value your time, otherwise you'll have to git gud before you can have any fun.

Hey there! To wrap up my thoughts on Banjo-Kazooie (as requested a little while back): definitely worth playing, and I appreciate a lot of the creativity that went into it. I did NOT enjoy the final boss, however, but the board game leading up to her was brilliant. I dislike a lot of the individual parts (not wild about Halloween and swamp themes, the hub world was a bit awkward to navigate, and there is far too much water for a game without an explicit nautical theme), yet I like the game as a whole because the controls and abilities are effective and the challenges are varied. I still prefer Super Mario 64, but this is one I'd recommend.

I don't have a problem with it, especially because the game remembers your highest score—if you had to exit the level without dying in order for anything you've collected to matter, then it'd be an issue. So far, at least, there are no bottomless pits or instant-death traps, and plenty of ways to regain health, so you just need to take on the riskiest stuff first so that you have less to redo if you fail. Which means you shouldn't expect to clean up EVERYTHING the first time you play a world.

Plus, there's a nice progression. Notes are easy to find and get, but there's a lot of them. The little multicolored critter things are trickier to find and get, but there are only five of them. The jigsaw pieces are the toughest to get, but you only need to pick them up once. Permanently collecting notes on the first pickup would throw off the evenness of the challenges.

Howdy! I'll be happy to talk Banjo-Kazooie when I'm done; remind me if I forget. So far it's pretty fun, and I can see why people speak so highly of it. I think I'm getting a little too old to enjoy "collect all the things" games like I used to, but it's definitely holding my interest.
