I completely hear you on the open-world games dilemma you have. I'm the exact same way.

BotW just doesn't give me that open-world dread though. I love it's sense of discovery. You climb a mountain and all of a sudden you see an enemy you never seen before, or a strange ruin or a new more powerful weapon. Something looks off and all of a sudden it's a Korok puzzle. I always feel like I'm making progress no matter what I'm doing.

This feels like the kind of Zelda game Nintendo always wanted to make but couldn't due to the technology. Ocarina of Time was relatively open, especially for it's time, but BotW's world is a whole new ballgame. I do want to focus on the main quests though since this will be one of the few games I have on Switch for a while and I always want something to play on the road. There is no rush to complete this one. I knocked out two divine beasts already but still lots to do.

Pfft, no way did I trade Charizard. It is literally the only thing I'm known for on the playground. "The kid with the Charizard". I'm famous elrobo, FAMOUS.

So you got a switch eh? I stuck with Zelda on Wii U to a) save money and b) not cave into the Nintendo hype again. I'll probably get an XB1 before I get a switch. I know, I am racking up the new games. However, in my defense most of those were games I bought over boxing week/Christmas or got through Games with Gold in the last 6 months that I just had never bothered inputting into Backloggery. So it's not as bad as it looks!

I am making a more concentrated effort to spend time gaming rather than just watching TV or browsing the internet. Not necessarily spending more time sitting than normal, but just turning that time into gaming time. I don't get the same satisfaction from movies or TV shows that I do from gaming. I don't know if it's the solving puzzles or beating obstacles or sense of progression or what. So my beat score should be higher than the last couple years!

You got the Switch as well?

How do you like it?

On another note, I did get a couple Pokemon boosters for Christmas and actually pulled the OG Charizard! I'm done

The important question is did you ever beat Cars 2? Or play it. Maybe it's a hidden gem. They don't really make shitty licensed games anymore, just f2p stuff. It's really not the same. There was something charming about the simplicity of a G-Force or Avatar game that had ambitions to actually be good.

I never got that dedicated to the cause, but once Deals with Gold started up and the online sales near black Friday and Christmas/Boxing day started getting rolling I accumulated a shitload of digital versions of games. Then had to add them to backloggery and put a ghost next to them because I didn't have enough space on the hard drive and for some reason there doesn't seem to be an easy way to check which games you have in your overall collection (not just the ones currently on the console).

I'm trying to make this year a real backlog clearing year. I can see my gaming time going down as the years pass and once I move in with my girlfriend in the fall and go into the PhD part of my program and eventually have a family and stuff it's just not going to be the same. So, I'm buckling down and forgoing binge watching TV or movies and spending so much time on Reddit and actually playing through the games in my backlog that I actually was/am excited to play and ignoring the mass of other stuff I've accumulated. Maybe I'll sell off those older unplayed or unwanted games, or maybe the nostalgia of having a big collection will prevent me from doing that. It's tough now that I buy most things digitally, my collection is fragmented, such that the stuff on the shelf is really only about 75% of my games now. There is something quaint about a collection, just like with books or music or movies, but like you said it's harder and harder to find the space for it that wouldn't be better used for more "adult" storage.

Yeah, basically for the reasons you mentioned FF13 is on the "probably never going to play list". Unless I somehow break both legs and am bedridden for 6 months and literally run out of other games to play. Spec Ops definitely still holds up. I'd unfortunately waited so long that I'd seen the occasional spoiler but otherwise I thought it was a fantastic game with great performances all around. Gameplay was pretty average for a cover based third person shooter but the plot was engaging and interesting. Cool alternative to the "save the world from destruction from the big bad guys" that so many games fall back on.

I definitely prefer Asylum to City for those reasons. It feels like there is too much padding and too much going on in City. 400 Riddler puzzles is excessive. The Asylum felt like a real place that had become overrun. City feels completely illogical even in the context of Gotham's universe and the story of the game. It's just such an impossibly bad idea. It also makes the world feel stretched out, whereas Asylum was so well designed and integrated as you moved from one area to another. City also suffers from too many villains and no clear direction on what the main plot wants to be, whereas AA very clearly had the Joker as its main antagonist with well defined motivations. That being said, the combat is as good as ever.

I appreciate the idea of a personalized collection that you can speak openly about. It's almost embarassing the number of games I have that are still in the shrink wrap. There are some games I look at and wonder why the hell I ever bought it in the first place. I went through a phase where I bought every game that was cheap and had even slightly positive reviews, which ended up with me owning things like Alpha Protocol and every Assassin's Creed and Tony Hawk and Transformers etc. My purchasing has definitely improved and I've begun to ask myself even with games that are super cheap, will I ever actually play this? Darksiders 2 was a recent example of one that was like $3 over Christmas and I passed. Even though it's the price of a coffee, the time investment has become more meaningful to me than the financial investment. I'd rather pay $70 for one game that I'll love than $70 for 15 games that I'll probably never play.

I've been having a similar crisis. So I did essentially the same thing, looked at my backlog and decided on the games that I'm really interested in playing. There's so much there that I either bought on sale, got for free, or simply grew out of (open world games especially, and JRPGs like you mentioned). So I started with Spec Ops, which I had heard great things about and wanted to play and found it amazing. Then I've moved onto Arkham City, which I've had since launch but never got around to. It's been nice picking games that I'm interested in instead of worrying about my backlog. I've just come to grips with the fact that there are a ton of games that I have that I'm just never going to get to. As an adult with grad school and work and a girlfriend and a social life and sports I don't have the time to devote to gaming that I did when I was a single teenager living at home and going to university.

Like you said, some games are just never going to be a priority. FF13? Long, not well reviewed, not particularly interesting or groundbreaking. When am I ever going to have 50 hours to put into a game like that that won't be better used on something else? Same with say, Medal of Honor Warfighter. Generic FPS? With those 8 hours I could play a couple short but cool indie games I've been wanting to get to.

So I think the shift to a quality over quantity mindset is going to be nice. I enjoy having the collection, so I don't know that I'll ever donate them, but I'm definitely starting to accept that I just won't finish most of them. Which makes the completionist part of me slightly twitchy with discomfort but exposure IS the best treatment.

You're a lot further into Pokemon than I am (I just beat the first trial and kahuna) but I'm totally seeing why you dig it so much. I didn't even know about no HMs but that is something I wanted forever. The humor is apparent as well, it's pretty self-aware.

I did get some pretty cool stuff out of the booster box. Got the EX cards of Charizard, Venusaur and Blastoise; three full arts of Misty, Pidgeot and Dragonite; and a bunch of holo rares and the like. Unfortunately, didn't pull a Charizard holo rare which is the real reason I wanted to open a box...I chased that card so hard as a kid.

It was fun though. I may try to go for the complete set, open a few boosters here and there, see how my luck goes. People always bug me for what I want for Christmas (I never really want anything) but this year I may just say "get me some packs of Pokemon cards like I'm 10 years old again"

Ah, you grabbed Pokemon Sun too! Nice to see.

I went on a vacation last month and ended up finishing Alpha Sapphire. I wasn't really planning on diving into Sun right away but I caught that Pokemon bug again.

Also, I even bought some Pokemon cards for the first time in...12 years? This new set came out that reprinted a bunch of the original cards and the nostalgia hit me hard. Bought a freaking booster box for $75 on Amazon (with the help of a gift card as well).

Yeah, fourth wall breaking is just a lazy way to give instructions to a player. It's like games are afraid to be games, and think if a text box explaining the HUD or how to play pops up then the immersion is ruined. We're not stupid; we know that we need to be taught to play especially if you have a complicated battle system or something. Then again, Dark Souls gets away without really explaining jack shit so I think another thing developers do is under-estimate the level to which we can figure it out with some trial and error. The trick then is designing a game that encourages trial and error without punishing failure too harshly. Can you imagine Super Mario Bros with a message box being like "press A to jump", "press B to throw fireballs", "jump on an enemy's head to defeat it".

I did not make it through my list of games but I did decide I wanted something with some horror to it for Halloween. I'm going to see if I can get through a couple games before the end of the month but I doubt it haha

30 minutes or an hour would probably give games more of a chance, but it would drive up the amount of time required to go through them all pretty substantially. I tend to think most good games are good from the start, and a few have shaky beginnings and get better. There are a handful of books and movies and games I could name that I love that grew on me over time, particularly TV shows, but for the most part I know if I'll like something pretty early on.

Dust did a bunch of things that I don't like, which also happen to be things that I don't assume will get better over time (the super annoying fairy character...worse than Fi for sure) and a bunch of third wall breaking dialog that's really out of place. There's no context for her shouting to mash buttons at the monsters because this isn't one of those Matt Hazard Duke Nukem "we're making fun of being a game" games, so it feels like cheap reference humour in a game that isn't about reference humour. It might be a personal thing, but I prefer a little box to pop up and say "press A to jump" rather than a character within the game world making reference to the fact that it's a game, i.e. "press the start button to view your journal log and set quest markers on the map". The voice acting is also kind of awful and the story was just a typically generic "you're the chosen one but you have amnesia here's a special sword" fantasy fare. That's the one area which could theoretically improve, if the story suddenly took some amazing twisting turn into something more interesting.

I've gone through 7 now, with the best probably being Dead Rising 2. I played Dark Void, Defense Grid Awakening, Dust, Cthulu Saves the World, Alien Hominid, and Hexic. I surprisingly liked Defense Grid and did not like Dust or Alien Hominid. It's really interesting to see what games give you in the first little bit, how they handle tutorials and story telling, and what kind of vibe you get from such a short intro. A bunch of the games in my upcoming list are ones I got free through Games with Gold, so it's stuff that I'd likely never buy or touch on my own.

The social life is really doing me in. I haven't had a night at home just to myself with no sports or activities or anything in over a month until tonight. So I'm trying to figure out what to play, but when you're so limited on time it's hard to make a decision and I'm paralyzed by fear. So what I'm doing is going through all of the games downloaded onto my 360 that I haven't played and playing the first 15 minutes. It's been really fun jumping into a variety of games I'd normally potentially never play and it takes the pressure of my choices out. I'm ranking them on a word doc and by the end, maybe I'll extend it to the rest of my collection or maybe I'll just pick my favourite and go from there. Maybe I'll figure out what it is I really feel like playing, or maybe it'll just be a fun sampling exercise.

Digging the new theme! What's it stand for? How do you progress through the colours? My only gaming these days essentially is having streams on in the background while I work or read or write. It's a sad state of affairs. I just want to go to all the kids in school and be like, ENJOY IT WHILE YOU CAN BEING AN ADULT IS TOO HARD

We have fallen behind on the bi-monthly picks!

I have been super busy, had a couple deaths in the family so I've been running around trying to help out family as much as I can.

Switching to a much more happy topic, I finally have a PS4! Had to pick one up since Uncharted 4 is out. Loving it so far. I have about 2 chapters to go in Uncharted and I'm planning on starting Ratchet soon.

How have you been?

Ah, I like the theme! Spiffy!

I have a confession: My backloggery game has been abysmal as of late. I didn't beat your choice last month. I haven't been keeping up with updates (still have a ton of games to add).

It's sad.

At this point I'm afraid to even try to update - it's such a mess.

Alright, sounds good to me! I was too busy as well. I started both Pikmin 3 and Devil May Cry but made no real progress, maybe I can beat both this month!

We might have to put something in place for this years Nov/Dec pick - like maybe pick a super short game you can beat in one sit down or something. I don't know, we'll figure it out.

Either way, I hope you had a great holiday!

I'm here! I made it!

I just picked out a few games for kirby so I should be caught up with that.

Feel free to pick out a game for me. I won't be able to do my last pick since my PS3 is having all the trouble in the world reading discs all of a sudden. It started doing it near the end of my Ico playthrough and it's gotten worse. I have never had so many problems with a console in my life! Up to the PS3 I've been super lucky and never had a console give me problems or break...guess that wouldn't last.

Every other system should be open game...so go nuts.

You started writing again!?! Holy crap, that's awesome! I bookmarked your blog, I'll try to check it out a couple times a week but feel free to drop me a comment if you put something new up. Glad you started that up though, wish I could do the same. I did love talking and writing about games with all you IGN peeps. I'm not a fantastic writer by any means but just talking about games and the industry is a passion of mine.

Hope you're doing well!
