The way I see it, leaving permadeath on but resetting upon a character's death actually creates a different kind of challenge. By resetting upon any death, you're essentially forcing yourself to do a "perfect" run of each stage where no one dies, which tends to require a different, sometimes more cautious mindset. It does feel strange at first to contradict a game mechanic directly like that, but I've come to really enjoy the feeling of perfecting each map to the point where no one dies. I'm glad you're enjoying the game a lot, it really is an excellently crafted challenge. Not once did the game feel unfair to me, and the game consistently introduces new mechanics and gimmicks with each stage so you can never really bank on the same strategy each time.

I could definitely see people wanting to turn off permadeath due to how hard the game can be. Personally, I feel like a lot of the challenge would be lost if you were allowed to sacrifice multiple characters in a chapter without losing them or having to restart the chapter to save them. But in the end, the most important thing is to have fun however you wanna do it, and thankfully you can lower the difficulty at any time if you're no longer enjoying it (though you can't go back up once you do).

Conquest (on Hard) definitely does not pull any punches. There were several missions where I had to spend hours retrying to get it right, and the game only gets harder as you go on. Even as someone who's played through all of the previous games in the series, it's easily one of the hardest ones to date. I shudder to even think of how hard Lunatic mode could be...

It's a fantastic game though, and I can easily see it being my favorite in the series or close to it. As long as you don't mind a serious challenge, you're gonna love it!

Thank you! I wish I had a proper follow-up comment to feel like an equal contributor in this exchange, but nothing organic comes to mind, so I'll leave you with this:

Glad to hear Breach & Clear was fun! I actually got Deadline from GOG.com's mystery game sale, and I had no idea what it was . Luckily, it sounds like something I'll enjoy, so I'll definitely have to check it out sometime and grab the first one if I like it.

Beat Rogue Galaxy and now you are onto one of my favorite games of all-time. I don't normally care for RPGs, but god did I love DQVIII!

Unlike most people I know, I enjoyed Rogue Galaxy. I hope you do too and take advantage of its excellent side activity!

I've really liked what I've played of the postgame, some of the fights have taken a good few tries to build a working strategy. I do agree that it takes way too long to get to this point, though. Could be a much better game if it cut out more of the early chapters.

You know, I am a big enough Star Trek fan that I *almost* picked that one up, despite my complete disenchantment with the reboot, because I love the Elite Force games and figured the story might be interesting. Skimming through a gameplay video, it looks just fine, but reading up on it...scary.
