I can tolerate the occasional dud in a series, but I agree; Other M is outright bad on so many levels. I'm not too keen on Hunters, either, but at least that one's just a mediocre game with a control scheme that is physically painful after too long. Unfortunately, Prime 3 suffers from some of the same problems as Other M—albeit much more mildly—so you can see where the series started to go wrong.

Metroid, like the Mega Man series, I think is at a point where the people in charge aren't entirely sure how to keep the series relevant and profitable. If you listen to the fans, all anyone wants is another sequel. It doesn't need to be wildly innovative or cater to a new audience; just make a good game like the ones we liked before, and we'll all be happy. Federation Force seems like an attempt to win over a new generation of Metroid fans, which is really unnecessary; all the old fans are still on board with the franchise if you give them an entry that feels like Metroid. That being said, I just started playing co-op Federation Force, and it's more enjoyable than expected, but it's a little ho-hum compared with other Metroid games.

I think if anyone can ever figure out how to make a proper sequel to Fusion, we'll get the series back on track. The whole thing is stalled because we can only do interquels and side stories.

I played AM2R briefly at a friend's house and was impressed with the music in particular; I'm very much looking forward to starting it once I'm done with my current side project.

Metroid Prime really is a marvel; I feel it holds up extraordinarily well and offers one of the most immersive video game experiences I've ever had. My second-favorite Metroid next to Super, and probably in my Top 20 list of favorite games. I'm also a fan of Prime 2; the locations are perhaps not as memorable and vibrant, and there are a few unfortunate missteps that can singlehandedly wreck the enjoyment, but otherwise it's a worthy successor. As for Prime 3...well, hopefully you enjoy it more than I do. Lots of wasted potential, some disappointing story and design decisions, and the Wii control scheme feels like a downgrade.

Yeah...I can deal with X6, but X7 is truly unpleasant. And only having one shot at rescuing certain Reploids in either game is totally bogus.

I agree that waiting can certainly be a component of good game design, and if it were just the Hammer Joes, I don't think I'd mind. But almost 50% of the stage enemies and moving obstacles in MM3 have invincibility periods where you cannot hit them, can only be hit in a specific location, or are altogether invincible. Seriously, almost 50%; I counted. That makes for a LOT of waiting—waiting for an opening to strike, waiting to line up your shot, waiting for an opportunity to run past. It bothers me how much starting and stopping there is; sometimes I just want to run through an area and blast and dodge as I go, but you're barely ever allowed to do that because of all the waiting.

I would argue that X6 wasn't badly designed, but rather poorly playtested. Badly designed games are inconsiderate toward the player but still beatable; in X6, it is physically impossible to complete certain sections if you're not outfitted correctly, and that speaks to a lack of playtesting. There are so many good ideas in the game, but most of them fall short because they only work on paper, not in practice. I do agree the soundtrack is spectacular.

I'm liking SotN so far, but I've already identified a few flaws that have a very good chance of bringing down my enjoyment of the game over time. I have played Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow, which I liked well enough; Rondo of Blood is easily my favorite in the series.
